View Full Version : Why are they cheaper?
phil 13 September 2007, 11:05 Batteries and Memory Cards on ebay
Just looking at a Cannon Battery £45 at Jessops £12 on EBay
the Same sort of price difference on CFII cards
Can there be much difference
ChefDude 13 September 2007, 11:11 not sure about other makes, but the cheap LiIon 1D batteries are to be avoided.
There's a reason they're NiMh - 8+fps draws lots of juice and the liIon batts just can't deliver the required current.
check all the numbers are the same
phil 13 September 2007, 11:18 I have bought one for my Canon and it seems to perform as well as the Canon supplied battery atm
Whether its life span will be shorter only time will tell
Pumpkin 13 September 2007, 11:53 Memory cards may well be counterfeit.
Batteries also may be substandard.
ChrisB 13 September 2007, 13:08 I got 3rd party batteries for my Ixus 400 - they do the job great.
I wouldn't touch any sort of branded memory (CF, SD etc) on eBay!
Markus 13 September 2007, 14:17 Anyone care to comment on the quality/reputation of Lenmar (http://www.lenmar.com/) batteries? I was considering an additional battery for the FZ8, and the official panny one is just a tad overpriced, so I had a bit of a look around and Lenmar came up in a few searches and others seem to comment they are as good as the original branded version.
BOB.T 13 September 2007, 14:17 I got a couple of seriously cheap batteries for my 300D, they're in my 20D now and have been great!
Looie 13 September 2007, 15:17 I've bought from 7dayshop.com and never had any problem with batteries or cards....
Pumpkin 13 September 2007, 16:03 7dayshop isn't Ebay. I ended up with a fake Sandisk. It looked very convincing, and I bet a high percentage of people never know they've been duped.
I got my money back in the end.
CharlieWhiskey 13 September 2007, 19:10 I personally would avoid Ebay for such items but 7 Day Shop and and plenty of other outlets do cheap enough stuff.
As for 3rd party batteries, I have 1 genuine(1100mAh) a 3 x 3rd party(1200-1400mAh) in total for the 20D and guess which one is on it's way out after a couple of years use, yep the Canon.
JohnS 14 September 2007, 09:19 I would avoid Ebay for memory cards - just too many fakes going about, though many people might not even notice or care.
I've bought from 7dayshop and play.com recently and had no issues.
I bought some cheap Canon equivalent batteries from a place in the US. They were £5 each including P&P. One works fine, if not better than the original Canon one, the other only lasts 100 shots or so on a full charge. But at the price to get one good battery out of it, then it's still reasonable value for money, and not worth the hassle of sending worth £5 back to the US.

phil 14 September 2007, 09:52 whats the issue with fake memory cards ?
Markus 14 September 2007, 12:45 John,
Where did you get the batteries from? Seeing as I'm in over that way it could be a handy source for batteries.
Markus 14 September 2007, 12:46 whats the issue with fake memory cards ?
Phil, a very quick google turned up this (http://www.overclockers.com.au/wiki/Fake_Memory_Cards)
Sonic' 14 September 2007, 13:45 I found ebay to be a lot more expensive for CF cards than the likes of www.play.com etc
pwhittle 14 September 2007, 13:55 just been looking for a flash drive for work, as it's the easiest way to get files onto a laptop when we need to
Looked through the catalogue of our chosen supplier.
Guess how much for a 1Gb drive?
Go on, play ball..
£180.
£330 for 3GB. They even still do 256s FGS.
Can I get one on line, or pop to Woollies? No, that'd poor value for money...
ChefDude 14 September 2007, 15:20 i used memorymegastore.com for mi transflkash micro sd cards - very cheap
JohnS 14 September 2007, 16:32 Markus,
I got the batteries from an Ebay seller in the states.
NB-2LH 1500mAh Battery for Canon 350D Kit Rebel XT 400D - eBay, For Canon, Digital Camera Batteries, Photography (end time 14-Sep-07 16:33:23 BST) (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NB-2LH-1500mAh-Battery-for-Canon-350D-Kit-Rebel-XT-400D_W0QQitemZ180159286851QQihZ008QQcategoryZ48516 QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem)
Postage is now cheaper at £3.00, so you can get the batteries for a mere £3.50!! Bargain I would say, though I have got one that doesn't hold a lot of charge, the other is fine.
John
Markus 14 September 2007, 20:26 50p for a battery, I can't be reading that correctly, can I? If so then it's fantastic value.
JohnS 14 September 2007, 20:34 Yep, I paid the princely sum of £4.49 each for both of mine including postage from the US. They took about a week - 10 days to arrive. At that price you could almost consider them disposable ;)
AndyC_772 14 September 2007, 20:51 whats the issue with fake memory cards ?
They're probably just slower, plus you won't get any kind of warranty with them. Given how cheap original branded cards are these days I wouldn't bother taking the risk - check out Camera Price Buster - UKs cheapest camera gear (http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk) for details of where to find the best deals. (Amazon are good for Sandisk too).
Cheap batteries, on the other hand, are usually fine - they're something that manufacturers like to make a lot of money from. I had a couple of Uniross Li-ion batteries for my old D30 (BP-511) and they were perfectly good, and I have a 3rd party battery for my Ixus 800 too which is also fine.
ricardo 14 September 2007, 21:06 The Sandisk prices on Amazon look ok at first glance, but the postage and packing are a joke.
I use play.com for things like memory cards - free p&p without taking the p.
AllanP 14 September 2007, 21:07 I've got a fake Ultra II SD from Ebay although I didn't know it was when I bought it. It's been fine and the write speeds are plenty fast enough for my needs.
Pumpkin 14 September 2007, 21:08 My fake Sandisk was slower than a genuine one. It had the full 2Gb capacity it was supposed to, but died within a year and wouldn't recognise in camera or pc.

Yes, you could. I think I'll purchase a couple of them, would be rude to just get one :D
Echo 15 September 2007, 20:03 I've found that the Hama CF cards are very good, eg the 150 x, and are quite a bit cheaper. Morris Photographic are 5 mins walk away so no P&P.
