I know I've seen this somewhere, but I'm buggered if I can find it. I've just got a set of facelift crystal headlights and grille to go on my classic......I know they will bolt straight on, but I also know that to finish it off you really need the bonnet.

I stumbled across someone's car on here that retained the original bonnet and just modded the grille....any ideas where the info has gone? (it may just be that I'm not searching right, but I've been looking for the last couple of hours and my eyes have gone square)

Hi mate the lights and the grille, are straight bolt ons, you can retain the bonnet but you need to trim the top of the grille

I've the same problem. Just fitted morettes to mine and I dont like the gap between light and grille. I've been making enquiries about the facelift grille, some say it will fit but most say it wont.
Is it much of a job to trim the top?

it is not a lot its just a touch on the top corners, it will all become clear when you fit the grille and try to shut the bonnet..

(the bit you trim off will not show with bonnet closed btw..)

Well, I made the change on Friday and finished it all on Saturday, have to say that I'm happy with the results...the shut lines aren't perfect, but the grille looks far more agressive under the original bonnet.

Me and my friend the Dremmel took out a section about an inch and a half long from the tip of the grille lip to allow to get to the bonnet catch, but other than that the rest of the grille remain untouched, and by removing the rubber stops on the back of the grille it now sits in a position that I am happy with.

I'll get some pictures up later as I've also replaced the front indicators for clear ones, makes the front end look much fresher.

I look forward to the pics, I've not got a grille yet, ut hope to get one soon.:)

Shut lines aren't perfect and had to take a section of the upper lip of the grille out to facilitate getting to the bonnet release, but overall I'm very pleased with the results.

I got a grille yesterday, I quickly put it on and thought that it was the front lip that had to be trimmed right across. I'll have to take a closer look tomorrow.:thumb:

If you leave the rubber bungs on at the back of the grille which sit against the slam panel then you will need to trim the front of the lip off. I found that by removing them, the grille lip sits just behind the leading edge of the bonnet. Remove a section to allow access to the bonnet release, doesn't need to be as large as the one I made but I wasn't sure of the movement and space required.

I then drilled two small holes in the top of the grille, and the same in the slam panel and attached two small zip ties to pull it all in against the slam panel. Not convinced I'm happy with that as a permanent feature but at least it not flapping about whilst I think of a better way....maybe a home made pair of brackets.

Can just use the pre-facelift grille with facelift lights. IMO the small gaps allow more air flow into the engine bay.

Crystal lights and an HID kit are really the best way to improve the lighting on a classic. The standard lights are crap to say the least, better with crystal, better still with HID's which aren't that expensive now.
