View Full Version : How much to 'rotate the turbo'

I'm after a price on how much I could expect to pay.
I have a 2.5 with V3 heads, phase 1 inlet manifold and a 20g with FMIC
I'm considering this to allow better airflow to the turbo.
I understand that it would need work to the:
Down pipe
Up pipe
intercooler pipework
Not sure what else
Would appreciate some prices
I understand you can change the inlet manifold, but I wanted to keep most things where they are (alternator/powersteering/aircon) - so thought it may be an easier option ?

p1prodrive 29 August 2007, 22:41 the inlet manifold realy needs reversing so that once turbo has been rotated you wont have any room for intercooler pipework (depending on what intercooler etc..)

mmmmhhhhhhh thats one thing i wanted to avoid.......
I wanted to leave the majority of it alone..... with the intention of just easing the air restriction into the turbo......
Coz that's gonna be £££££s i ain't got :nono:

p1prodrive 29 August 2007, 23:23 phil - its not that exspensive tbh but it is a lot of trouble for your needs.
are you running a fmic or tmic ?

If you are looking to get someone to do the job for you, it could end up quite costly due to the time involved.
It is a case of trial and error, and trying to get everything to fit where it isn't originally intended to.:Whatever_
Here was my early attempt with an 18G turbo.
The angle of the turbo wasn't ideal, but it gives you an idea as to what it looks like.
The outlet from the compressor wheel comes out under the induction, and follows the chassis rail to the FMIC.
I think I measured about a 1 metre reduction in pipwork from turbo to throttle body when done this way.

I'd have to get it done by someone..........
Looking for a few prices to compare first....... and I thought it may be easier/cheaper than an alternative (Changing the inlet manifold from a Phase 1)
Depending on costs will determine if it goeas ahead or not.....

harvey 30 August 2007, 09:44 You can buy kits to tilt the turbo from Roger Clark Motorsport and others too but the cost will be signifigant. There are probably better things to spend your money on if you want value for £ spent.

Yes... I think twisting rather than tilting would be the correct term....
I thought it would be a 'simpler way' to ease the air intake .........
.... but it's not sounding so easy..... lol........ and it's sounding a few ££££'s

Slowboy Racing 01 September 2007, 09:30 It might be worth adding that there are bolt on units of making around 500 so unless your going over this for the sake of the cost versus gain you would be probably better leaving in the standard position selling the 20g and putting that towards a different turbo.

But I can't get away from thinking that as I have a Phase 1 inlet manifold..... it will never allow me to have a Front Entry Turbo 'as such' as It will require some sort of 90' bend...........
...... which I see as a potential restriction on the inlet side........ No ?
Any suppliers able to comment/respond ?

jaytc2003 04 September 2007, 11:30 as said above, it depends on your goals with regards to power output. It only becomes a restriction at certain levels so if your not going above these then it is an uneccesary expense for no gain.

IMHO though, I don't think it released any more power on my car, it just removed about 1 metre of intercooler pipework from turbo to throttle body.
Which when you think that there is approx 3 metres from turbo to TB with a FMIC, is quite a lot.
I never suffered from any noticable lag though..;) :D
The Fixer 04 September 2007, 19:53 Forget it, the rotated up-pipe & downpipe will cost you £500 upwards and you wont gain that much on your 20G. Add to that, that most of these kits are for T3 flanged turbos like Garrett's not Subaru flanges and thats another spanner in the works. As mentioned earlier sell the 20G and maybe look at upgrading to an FP Green turbo to get nearer 500HP. You could always get the phase 1 manifold raised or modified to accomodate the front entry turbo and I'm sure it would be cheaper than a rotated kit. :)
