is there some way of finding all the threads i've posted in or started without looking through everyone for the dot on the envelope?

There are two main ways. One way is to set you preferences in your User CP to subscribe you to every thread you post in. The other is to subscribe to ScoobyNet Plus, or upgrade your account to Full Member or Full Member + and you can then use the advanced search functions.
