View Full Version : Whats a good first bike???
scoobygav555 31 July 2007, 23:51 Hi guy's an gals,
I've not got a bike licence but a mate came round the other day on his GSXR 600 (some kind of limited edition too). Having never really been into bikes enough to buy one i was suprised as to how much i liked it. Really liked it! I sat on it and it felt great (first sports bike i've sat on:rolleyes:), and i immediatley thought about getting my licence:) I believe you have to do your test on a 125 then something extra on a 500 to enable you to ride anything? Correct???
My question is, is a GSXR 600 a good bike to get straight away? Baring in mind i will be taking it VERY easy at first and buiding my confidence up from there.
Any advice is great,
Gav..:thumb:
Pudders69 01 August 2007, 09:04 Everyones gotta do a CBT, and if you are over 21 then it DirECT Access you want....do it sooner rather than later, i think in 12 months it becomes even harder and more expensive...governments...pah!!!!!!!!!!
i believe you can put a newbie on owt as generally fear will keep you in check, the gsxr600 is a very fast bike, especially for a newbie, but i started on a zx6r and i can honestly say anything that happened was my own dumbass fault.
Get ya license, buy the gixer and remember don't confuse your intentions with your abilities and you'll be fine.

Edcase 01 August 2007, 11:42 I've jumped straight on a 900cc Duc Monster, as above the fear keeps you in check initially! You pretty quickly adapt and adopt...survival instinct as much as anything. It's going to take me a loooong time to be able to exploit the real performance safely, but that is half the draw for me. I enjoy a steep learning curve or I lose my interest, it's why I sold the scooby, it was just too easy to drive on the limit. The M5 still keeps me honest, and I think the bike will always be an even greater challenge.
amazingjames 01 August 2007, 13:23 i passed a couple of months ago and got myself a zx7r and its been fine. i have had a few moments but thats not the bikes fault its mine. get whatever you feel you can ride safely.
gixer6 01 August 2007, 17:03 DO IT !!! :thumb:
Passed my Direct Access 4 years ago and the same day went and ordered my new Gixer 600. 4 years on and I've gone through the IAM training and passed the Advanced test and would strongly recommend this to anyone. Dont think you need to get some experience of riding before you go on to do the advanced course. Took my mate to the TVAM (Start Menu - Thames Vale Advanced Motorcyclists (http://www.tvam.org.uk) if you're anywhere near Wokingam) bike club meet 3 days after he passed his direct access and I'm convinced it probably saved him from throwing his CBR 600 down the road. Why wait to pick up bad habits !!
Now looking forward to next year and a potential upgrade to the GSXr 750 or 1000 :norty:
Tracie P 01 August 2007, 17:44 I done the same as Edcase, went out and bought a Ducati Monster900 first, then went to a CBR6 which would be a great first bike.
Now got a little NC30.

tonymontana 05 September 2007, 12:44 My sneaky mate was doing his test unknown to the rest of us. He showed up at my work on red/white/black Yamaha R6 having only passed his test 2 days beforehand.
CrisPDuk 05 September 2007, 16:25 My mate is happy with the 600 Gixxer he bought prior to passing his test.
He's a complete nutter in a car, but hasn't killed or maimed himself after nearly a year on it, so I would think they're safe enough:thumb:
scooby-power 05 September 2007, 17:43 my first bike, which i have now was a 2001 yzf r6, its very light you can throw it around it handles great and its quickkkkk, love it
GregR 05 September 2007, 23:15 As its mentioned below I have a Ducati Monster for sale, its my second bike the first was a Monster 600.
Great first bike, as you have to perfect your throttle control (V twin engine braking) and the low seat height makes it confidence inspiring and avoids any embarrsing car park wobbles but still comfortable enough for a chunky 6 footer like me! And proper head turning Ducati soundtrack.
Have a look at the advert thanks.

DeltaBravo 9 06 September 2007, 17:16 i think the restrictions after you pass your test apply to age ?!?!
Muerde 07 September 2007, 15:14 The best first bike bar none is a CB500, fast enuf to start slow enuf to not get in trouble. Cheap tyres, loads of parts avaliable, cheap insurance adn will get you though any silly situations you get in without slapping you in the face.
If you want to start biking on a huge expensive bike do it.. if your going to use it all the time to and from work you will learn far more on something less silly.
