Hi, I'm after some advice really, when i was a kid my cousin had a montessa cota trials bike, that i used to mess about on sometimes. I've now decided that i want to buy myself a trials bike to ride around my field, (motocrossers are to quick for me nowadays, i just don't bounce the same) but you don't see to many for sale, i was wonderering where the best place to look was, and whats good and whats not so good, to buy. Also do'es anyone know what the law is, on riding around your own fields, can i just get on with it, or will some namby pamby do gooder complain to someone, ( i don't really care, i just like to know if it's legal or not).

I used to ride trials back when they was all 2 strokes! Not seriously, just playing around in our local woods.

I dont think it would be that much fun riding it around a field, you need a bit more challenging enviorment for a trials bike than that , lots of built up wooded area, tree, banks etc.

Noise wise, well trials bikes are low revving and not offensively loud so they would be much less offensive to any neighbours

IMHO a crosser would (or quiet ish enduro )bike be much more fun in a field thou..

I've done the crosser thing in the past, and now i'm too old and don't bounce that well anymore, the banks and wooded areas are not a problem, iv'e got plenty of rough areas to play in, it's just a case of finding a reasonable bike at a reasonable price.

Hi, as with anything you only get what you pay for. Modern trials bikes (1990 +) although more capable, require more, and sometimes costly, maintainance (suspension & brakes) than the older more robust "twinshocks" The best option for your needs would be an "air cooled mono" type, more than capable for most but not as competitive as the new generation of bikes. Don't rule out a new or newish trials bike because they are fantastic for what they are meant to do, the're just not as general purpose as the old ones, but the old ones weren't as lightwight.

air cooled mono - YamaheTY -Beta - Fantic - Honda

Modern - Anything except a Fantic Section:nono:

New Anything

Visit a local Trial there's always someone selling a bike to fund a new one and if they are competing on it there's a chance it is in ok condition and you can try it out :thumb:

I've seen a few Beta Rev3's going for reasonable money, but i've heard they have some electrical problems, any ideas on these bikes, i.e: good/bad or indifferent?

Sorry I can't help on the elec problems, but yes a first class and very popular bike. the plus on these is it has NO suspension linkage and be aware that these bikes have a left hand kickstart. not a problem for most people. 200cc or250cc (most popular for a novice) is the better one for you the 270cc is for experts and would show up any poor throttle control you may have, they are for going up things you should'nt take a bike up:cuckoo:

I think you'd get a lot more use out of a road legal trail bike... even modern 4 stroke crossers are easy to ride these days

Try looking on or in Trials and Motorcross news:

Trials + Motocross News - Off road new & used bikes (http://www.tmxnews.co.uk/)

I rode scoolboy trials from the age of 6 - 19 a good few years ago though but Tmx was the best place to find a bike.

What to choose comes down to your budget best to buy as new as you can IMO as some older bikes can have had a hard life - I know all mine did !! :norty:
