Not surprising really

Shame in some respects, but did you see the empty grandstands on race day, I was quite shocked at the low number of people that attended

I even heard that the local radio stations were giving more coverage to the strawberry festival that was on the same weekend

The grandstands that were empty were the ones that are basically miles away from the infield track as used by F1. You have to bare in mind the grandstands are set up around the brickyard oval and many stand a long way off from the F1 circuit. From what I saw it was primarily these that were empty. The stands that are up close to the F1 circuit (i.e the parts of the oval that are incorporated into the F1 circuit) were all relatively full.

Whilst the race might not be the best at being promoted in the US, in comparison to their homegrown race series' it is still one of the best attended F1 meets, with over 100,000 spectators on race day this year, compare that to one of the "best ever" attendances at Silverstone this year of 90,000+
