I may end up regreatting it but reeeeally fancy respraying my nasty gold original alloys, think they would look much better black to go with the car or maybe anthracite.

was wondering if after all the prep cleaning, sanding etc, do i need to apply primer befor the paint? also do i need specialise paint or would norrmal paint spray be ok, im not expecting top class professional finish but trust me it will look better than what they are like now and a damn site easier to keep looking cleaner.

any tips?

COMPRESSOR OR CANS?

ill be using cans. halfords do sell alloy paint but didnt know if it was necessary.

right mate ill give u some advice on how id do it personally. have a lot of painting experience with cans or guns!

first of all decide whether ya wanna make it easy for ya self by nipping down to ya local an get em to whip tyres off or if ya feel ya good enough to mask tyre off well do that. next depending on how bad they are rub down the chips with some 320 production paper if the are ok to do so with if not try a bit of 180 if ya think 320 not doing owt. if they are major and beyond rubbing a little bit of filler wont hurt, then rubbed down. key the entire wheel down with scothbrite if it is original surface or paint, if its all flaky been paited before you will have to flat it down smooth with paper. when happy with prep,
next get some panel wipe or other solvent and totally clean wheel best you can leaving no dust or dirt. mask tyre and valve off, can be tricky so take your time.
halfords spray paint is very good for primer and basecoat. lacquer is average. ive seen a mate paint his wheels white with plasticote which have never used - very nice shine looked good. could be an option, no need to lacquer then as it shines.
right buy either grey primer for metals or even better get there etch primer then trying best to cover even and keeping it wet after a dust coat. leave to dry for 24 hours. then give it a quick flat with 1200. then paint with the colour paint you want - nice coat after a dust coat. let dry for ten mins and then couple of coats of lacquer. will be tricky with no experience to do it right. my idea for you would to primer then spray them in plasticote. my mate did it whos never really painted anything b4 but looked good1

nice one, im in middle of spraying parts on my car, spent couple of hours this morning primering back bumper and skirts, compressor started burning out on motor, only prob is i borrowed compressor off a mate

I did my wheels using 2k paint which is a lot more durable than the single acrylic that Halfords sell.

If using the later, the finish wont last 2 minutes.

Even the 2k paint chips. From now on its powder coat only for me.

I agree, powder coating is the toughest style of paint u can get, and it leaves a flawlessly smooth finish. Not too expensive either

i got a quote for getting my wheels powder coated it was only £32 per wheel.. not bad really
