Moved this here as you may get more of a response.
I looked into this in the UK and Dubai. Rode a lot of different models off road in Dubai:)
Best makers are the usual suspects, Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda, also Polaris make them. The UK has a lot of cheaper Chinese imports, 1/2 the price of the brand names, not so weel built perhaps but this really only shows off road /after a fair amount of use.
for road use you want 250cc+ which will cruise at 60-70.
It is easy to buy a container of cheap bikes from China and sell them on ebay or such like, the problem then is the lack of spares or back-up. check out the spares/dealer network (if any) before you commit or you may get a bargian until it goes wrong.
For cheap and cheerful i would go with a RAM 250, set you back around £ 1600.00 new easy tune with pipe, filter and rejetting. Uses the old Honda 250 superdream engine remanufactured by a Chinese co. You can still find the original 400 superdream engines, swap right in (apparently) for more power!
Big boy bikes are the 650cc modes which really do fly - like being strapped to a missile!
Get a helmet and wear it, not a legal requirement but common sense.:)
You only need a car licence to ride one.
Not too sure re insurance.

No problem,
the only issue i have is that they are a chav charriot around here. i would love one for just messing about on/softroading/nipping into town, may get an enduro bike instead. :)
For what i want i would go for a decent s/h 250-400 Suzuki/Honda/Yam or a new Ram 250.

Couldn't agree more. It is a bit of a generalisation but you do see some deeply unpleasant people riding them (male and female).

i flew around on my pals yam 660 raptor for a while , great for a while but the fun does wear off . specially when you cant filter/overtake like u can on a bike and they havent got much in the way of top speed either , fast cornerings quite a handfull too {opposite lean an all that } . proper sideways action in the rain tho :thumb: .
was insured as an agricultural vehicle { yea right } cheap cheap .
dont forget you need a garage , unless you can james bond it 2 wheel stylie down the alley / or through the gate .
