on a MY00 Classic Impreza.

The proper plastic number plate screws have broken off in the holes and the end of the screw is still in the bracket on the back of the 'box'.

So for the time being I have got a small screw that screws in a little way and just about holds on the plate.

So with out taking the bumper off to remove the bit of screw, would drilling it out work??

Reason I as is that I want to be able to screw my JDM plates on securely for shows etc.

Any help would be good.

Yup. Gently drilling them out with a small drill bit will work. Try and aim straight down the centre and they'll fall apart. you can then prod the pesky things out. Just pretend you're a dentist and take your time.

Would a hand drill work as I don't nor does my dad have a modern drill, only an old black and decker electric drill.

Go pick up a cheap £10 rechargeable drill from your local diy store. Mines just a homebase special and is brilliant. Doubles as a screwdriver too. Go on, treat yourself.

Exactly the same thing happened to me the other week, took me about 45 minutes to pick the bits out, probably knackering the thread! Why do they use the plastic screws?!?! I've ended up just sticking mine on now.

A hand drill was fine. I got the remaining bits out. Now, what the screws screw into is a very small bit of metal (part of this bracket) and its all rusty and the plstic number plate screws (with bolts) won't screw in. So what I was thinking, was to drill two new holes above the existing ones so I can use the n. plate screws. But doing this I will need a new front number plate as there is not quitre enough room for me to drill in my current one.

Like I put above mate, buy some of the numberplate sticky pads from Halfords or somewhere (cost me about £4) and stick it on! If you want to fill the holes in the plate then glue the heads from the plastic screws back over the holes, exactly as I did! It looks like it's screwed in and holds fine.
