View Full Version : Technical Question, what's so special about radial brakes? CrisPDuk 10 June 2007, 12:45 As far as I can see a bike with radial brakes looks to be no different to a bike with just brakes, what am I missing:wonder: scunnered 10 June 2007, 13:32 You're not missing that much. There is little to no difference in braking performance on a road bike. Radial brakes for bikes have come directly from the automotive industry where it has been common place for years. They don't really offer any real world performance gains other than improved pad wear. There design has been almost exclusively focused on the illimination of torsional caliper flex. As a result of being mounted radially instead of perpendicularly mounted (90° to the rotor face axis), the calipers can also be made much lighter. All conventional calipers are mounted at the trailing edge of the line of force, and that the energy transfer (to the forks) of the braking forces are all focused on just one side of the clamping pressure as applied to the spinning rotor. If you then factor in the normal production tolerances between the mounting faces of the rotor/wheel, fork/caliper--plus perpendicular axle alignment within the wheel to these faces etc, you can see where even a slight mis-alignment can cause massive torsion flex under hard braking. This is the reason why radial brakes are used on race bikes. For normal road use however, they are really only a fashion statement (in my opinion). CrisPDuk 10 June 2007, 19:45 Is that it:rolleyes: Christ, I thought the way all the magazines were hailing it as the 'New Big Thing' it was something revolutionary:wonder: I mean, the front brake calipers on my '78 CB550 are radially mounted, and they're sh!t:lol1: rigga 10 June 2007, 22:59 Radial master cylinders have far more benefit than radial mounted calipers..... Tis more form over function these days to have radial calipers. GROWLER_GRRRR 10 June 2007, 23:19 radial brakes on a gixer 1000 are shi te give me some good old nissan brakes ,no gimicks and get the standard suspension sorted as well cos thats shi t as well money grabbers i think .:Suspiciou rigga 10 June 2007, 23:45 the radial m/cylinder coupled with the conventional fitment brembo calipers on my superduke are the best brakes ive ever been fortunate to try.... latest model comes with radial calipers..... and i found them not to be any improvment at all.... look better if thats your thing. GROWLER_GRRRR 10 June 2007, 23:48 you just hit the nail on the head with the radial master cylinder they may be good but suzuki dont give you jack sh£$% , id love a go on one of them super duke thingy me jigs bet a compatant rider can make some serious road craft happen on that bad boy .......:lol1: rigga 11 June 2007, 13:19 Go grab an extended test ride at any KTM dealer...... you will be pleasantly supprised how well they go :thumb: :D :D http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/rigga955/PIC01385.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/rigga955/PIC01385.jpg) GROWLER_GRRRR 11 June 2007, 14:45 i think i will , cheers for the info ktm thats the ticket . ow whats the reliabilitie like on the engine in spaticular heard a few storys of water pumps failing and killing the engine also the crank shafts go bang as well #?:wonder: rigga 11 June 2007, 14:53 very reliable to be honest, lc8 motor is what ktm base their dakar racers on so they build them tough.... some isolated instances of failures, but like other manufactures there will always be the odd blip.... otherwise they are bullet proof..... early bikes 05/06 came with a slight low speed fuelling issue, but sorted with dropping the front sprocket one tooth and adding some free breathing cans and the appropriate map from ktm.... ktm themselves adopted the revised gearing for 07 onwards... sound spanking with the restrictive cat pipes removed. firstscoobdude 11 June 2007, 21:51 Go grab an extended test ride at any KTM dealer...... you will be pleasantly supprised how well they go :thumb: :D :D http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/rigga955/PIC01385.jpg (http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/rigga955/PIC01385.jpg) ergghhhh yuk wat the fecks that ugly she ite thing at first glance i thought it may have been a cb500 :Suspiciou !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! rigga 11 June 2007, 22:55 Yea...... its very similar to a cb500........ not GROWLER_GRRRR 12 June 2007, 05:54 wo wo wooo efing dont have a go at my trusty steed , id like to see your ktm notch up 80k plus miles eh eh ....... ! f scoobydude how you doing me old mucker hows the stunting going . :lol1: :Suspiciou |
