View Full Version : Getting rid of trees...?
v8voodoo 19 April 2007, 23:58 A "friend" of mine has some smallish trees growing at the bottom of his garden.
He's heard that drilling them and pouring some diesel in kills them off pretty quickly. :Suspiciou
Any other suggestions apart from a chainsaw, as that option isn't open to him...?
Cheers,
Nige.

little rick 20 April 2007, 11:19 You can buy stuff that is designed to kill off tree stumps - much like the diesel idea you drill holes and pour it in
Not sure if it works on full trees as its designed for removing stumps once they've been cut down but if the tree isn't overly big should work
hutton_d 20 April 2007, 13:32 Why not just use a bow saw to cut them down??

little rick 20 April 2007, 22:07 A friend (this definately is a friend) tells me the stuff you want is tree disease - what I was on about before - it kills off the tree with a natural disease :Suspiciou - He cant remember where he got if from though, sorry
baser999 21 April 2007, 02:27 Sadly , none of those products work quickly - you can't just apply it and stand back and watch the tree keel over. Cutting back is certainly the best option , if possible. Subject to what trees they are, it might be necessary to speak to the council - they don't take kindly to people 'removing' trees and can come down pretty heavy on offenders.
RichardS2005 22 April 2007, 21:30 I got a guy to come and cut down and grind out the stumps to 12" below surface - cost about £250 for 3 and a further stump. Have a look in yellow pages?
Cutting down is not too hard - disposal is a bit of an arse though!

jim litten 22 April 2007, 22:22 Drill the trunk and pour in caustic soda, it'll eventually kill the tree and more enviromentally friendly than diesel, just remember if it has a TPO on it the "owner" of the tree could end up with a rather large fine or other if it is a specimen tree.

how do you ind out if a tree has a TPO and do they apply to new young trees or only older established ones
orbix 23 April 2007, 09:17 I heard that you can hammer copper nails into a tree it kills it.

Its either on the deeds or comes up on the searches the solictor does - can't remember which. You can phone the council, but be careful, I've heard cases where TPO's have been placed on the back of an enquiry!
DJ Dunk 26 April 2007, 09:41 Sodium Chlorate will do the job, get it in a big tub from garden/DIY centres.
It will kill it by root absorption, so get it as close to the roots as possible, drill into them and put some in there if possible. You won't be able to plant anything there for a while though.
jonesy172 26 April 2007, 19:21 Dont use diesel, you'll contaminate your soil!!! Just dig them out depending how big they are and possibly hire a chipper
al4x1 27 April 2007, 13:19 If I'm reading this right and they aren't technically yours then one subtle way is to get a 25kg bag of dishwasher salt then get a bucket and disolve as much in warm water as possible and pour round the trees keep repeating till the bag is empty and sit back and wait for them to die ;)
SPEN555 27 April 2007, 13:39 Be done with it and set fire to them :D quick and decisive, might need an accelerant to get it going ;)
