Or to put it another way, how many miles will a chain do assuming it's reasonably well looked after and it suffers no hooligan behaviour?

I guess it's good practice to change front and rear sprockets at the same time?

Well a piece of string is twice the distance from the middle to the end. ;)

A properly maintained chain will last 15k to 20k miles, or more, depending on how you ride.

Yes, always renew the sprockets with a new chain. Because old worn sprockets will wear out the new chain more quickly.
