View Full Version : Advice on Room in Garage

Looking at making a room in the garage more of a useable room instead of just storage :)

Basically the floor is sound solid concrete, so can easily have flooring laid on top or carpeted

My main concern is that the Garage is constructed of single block, rendered externally, and bare block internally

I would be looking at studding and plasterboard, as there is no cavity, currently would this be ok, or would when studding be prudent to fit some insulation inbetween the studwork before fitting the plasterboard

There isnt a ceiling as such (well half of one) in that room, and the Garage has a pitched tiled roof, as the main are of the garage has a loft space (quite a decent size too really)

There isnt any heating in the garage, so Im a bit concerned about it getting damp in the winter months, and too cold (i want to keep electrical gear in there) as I want to use it as a recording studio

For the ceiling, would it be best to fix battens to the wall, and fix plasterboard to this?

It has a lockable door into the main garage area, where the car will be stored along with all the junk I have :)

Looking for the best options really, but also on a budget, and something I can manage myself (apart from plastering :))

edited to add, the room im looking at doing is 10' x 8' the main garage area is approx 22' x 14'

If you're looking at a recording studio, then you should stud out all the walls & fill them with Acoustic mineral wool (http://www.customaudiodesigns.co.uk/soundproofing/amw.htm). Sepending on what you're doing in there, you may also want to install a floating floor (http://www.customaudiodesigns.co.uk/articles/howtofloors.htm) to stop sound transferance into the house.

This (http://www.customaudiodesigns.co.uk/help.htm) site used to have some help articles, but the links don't work - try giving them a call.

Thanks Al

Forgot to say the Garage is detached from the house, and some 30-40 feet away from the house, and the other side of the garage is 10 miles of farmers fields :D

It already has seperate electrics too

I was thinking about using Acoustic treatment behind the plasterboard, one for insulation, and one for soundproofing, but to be honest, Ive had a jukebox on in the garage which was unbelievably loud in the garage, but outside even with the door open, you could only just hear the music, sat in the garden :)

thermoboards could be an idea(plasterboard with insulation on them which fix onto the battern, 35mm thick)
