We live in an old terrace with a shared water main with next door. We are first in line for the water but they branch off before the water gets to us. Thus we loose pressure when they have water running.

Pipeline want £1000 ish to put is on a seperate supply.

If we were to ask to go on a water meter would we need to go on a seperate supply? If so then would the water company have to pay for the work to put us on a seperate supply?

Cheers,

try closing their stopcock down a little (ie in assuming it's in the street) - might make a difference and they may never notice

no idea about the meter issue though - there must be a charter somewhere (ie the aims of the water suppier, pressure, flow etc targets - if your supply doesn't come anywhere near these targets, then you may be able to use that as a lever, but in that situation i'm pretty sure they would have to fit a meter in any case). not sure any of that helps you though :-)

I've got the same problem: my house was last of a line to be built, and my water Tee's off the next door's. I only found out when she had a problem and mine went off when they were fixing hers:mad:

Water company has investigated, and sure enough, I'll have to pay, what a surprise.....NOT.

My pressure is JUST over 1 Bar, and whatever is supposed to fill in under a minute fills in 59.9 seconds, but honestly, I can p*ss further than the hose will squirt:mad:

But hey: the water company made HUGE profits last year...........

Turning the stopcock down will only affect pressure if its on their supply after the pipes are tee'd apart. If its before yhis it ill make no difference.

Where is the main supply? If in f/path or road near your property border then lay pour own supply, that way you'll only need your local water supplier to contact onto the mains.

If your existing pipe is lead ten you can get a grant for this.

As for a meter afaik it now has to be fitted in the public footpath so that may make things easier as well.

There is one stop tap in the road that serves the two houses. The main feed comes to us but is teed off before we get it, the stop tap is before the tee so would stop us both getting water.

The meter would have to go in after the tee so only our usage is recorded, this is where I am thinking they might have to sort our supply out first so we don't share the supply. But knowing the utility companies they will be wise to this already.
