Paul managed to turn by jungle patch into a nice courtyard space. The finished pictures don't include the plants as yet (just waiting for the planters to turn up)

p.s. You can't see the LED lighting that's hidden in the decking and posts - looks cool at night..

I like that a lot. Be interesting to see when planted up.

Are you putting a climber up against the trellis?

I'm waiting for the jungle pics in the 'before' ;) If you want to see what wild weeds and brambles look like I'll get a pic of the untouched portion of my land when I'm in Ireland next. At least 7ft tall!

Nice job BTW. Some Clematis or roses for the trellis?

cuts on rear? obviously you have to be careful you don't split the front though!

that looks really good. nice easy-care garden (subject to which plants you're going for of course). the trellis gives it a nice bit of vertical vertical interest too, and that's without anything even growing there yet

The deckboards were cut with a 136mm Trim saw, running to a 3.07m radius taken from a central point on the garage wall, (we built a timber frame to hold the timber in place) the 4in poles were put in using the same method/measurement, giving a flowing 180 half circle.

Richardg is correct, the fascia board has a half depth cut every two inches to help it mould to the radius. We then used several kettles full of boiling water to moisten the wood and make it more plyable, not strictly nesscessary on such a large radius, but saves wasting 40mins+ of prep work.

Its important to pick a board that has no knots along the top and bottom edges, these represent weak points and would cause the timber to split/break. With a 3m+ radius this kind of curve is easy to fascia, the tighter the radius the more chance you have of splitting the wood. We have personaly fitted these to a radius just under 1.5m, but that was bloody hard work ;) Tighter radius fascias require you to soak the board once you have the cuts in place.

The plan was to create a usable low maintenance garden with a courtyard feel. The beds won't be planted, instead we will be using large round zinc planters, one in the front small half circle, one in the rear quater circle and two smaller ones either side. We will prob plump for some bamboos etc to bring a little more height/colour and add a nice green contrast to the dark brown fencing.

Glad you guys like :)

Glad you are using planters for bamboo as some can be quite invasive.

Looks really really good. It might be an idea to stain/treat the wood before it gets dirty and mould starts growing.

What you gonna do with the mower now;)

Thanks guys, thats just the tip of the iceberg, we specialise in custom/complex decking structures. I will post pics of the job we are working on this week, will be finished Friday (god willing!).

I (we) are based in Hemel Hempstead, and will cover most of the surrounding areas. I tend to travel a little further afield if the job interests me and has scope for some decent design work!

Ah - Hemel's a bit far for the little garden I have to sort out in Worcester!

Not really a garden, but a 45 degree slope up behind a terraced house - have to do something low maintenance before I let the place!

I have a feeling that old railway sleepers to create terraces and some of that ground cover sheet that stops weeds will be the basics!

Cheers,
Steve

POC's a legend. Only he could move some 265 tonnes of soil from our previous back garden with a wheelbarrow - or at least his chaps did. That was a quality bit of work as well as we both recall - and he came from Hemel to Surrey everyday! Andy

Thanks fella, I'll never forget that job!

Just finished this little deck, spec was to create a large seating area, along with flat and safe access down the side of the house.

Paul, I take it decking works out cheaper than a patio finished with slabs/bricks? If so by how much? Also does decking last? What maintenance required?

Thanks

Deep
