View Full Version : Part P electrical regulations
C_B_B 12 April 2007, 22:03 I've had conflicting advice regarding the Part P electrical regulations, and what i can do as a non qualified person.
I'm looking to change the sockets and switches, old for new in a residential property. In addition change a power shower, old for new and also wire in a new electric oven, in place of an old unit. Am i allowed to do these things without getting an electrian involved?
I won't ask if i'm going to be able to change and update the consumer unit, i can guess the answer to that one! :lol1:
sparky d 12 April 2007, 22:44 you can but will need certs from a part p qualified sparky after he/she has tested it for you , and of course providing they are happy to do this for you , however if your not looking to sell then i prob wouldnt bother but it may cause a prob or to at a later date .

John@TunerUK 12 April 2007, 23:22 You can swap like for like without falling foul of Part P. This includes swapping sockets, swapping switches, swapping lights, cookers, even removing an old damaged cable, and replacing it with a IDENTICAL new cable.
I must stress that you must not increase the size of the breaker feeding the shower, it's there to protect the cable, so check that the new shower isn't going to draw too many amps.
To do this, use this simple sum
Current drawn = wattage divided by 230
so, a 10Kw shower works out like this
10,000 divided by 230 = 43.48 amps.
Therefore the breaker would have to be a 45 amp breaker, and the cable would have to be capable of carrying in excess of 45 amps

It's true what you say though. If you can find some numpty able to self certify to inspect it, test it, and sign for it, then you can do whatever you like yourself.
I know for one that I wouldn't do it, because if the NIC EIC ever found out I'd be booted out before you can say "supercalafragali".............. "Supercalafrigal".......... "supercaloflafilis"................:wonder:
