View Full Version : Roma v's United
STi wanna Subaru 05 April 2007, 09:13 come on then chaps.... thoughts on the FOOTBALL?
mine are...
Bright start from roma then United started to get control of the ball before Scholes lost his head and got himself sent off. Thought the 2nd yellow was harsh but with the ref being a home banker it was expected. The treatment Ronaldo came in for a joke. dirty kicks to bring him down with zero intent to play the ball. when he was running at them the tackles we reckless but he was too good and luckily they missed. They were yellows for intent.
We've got a makeshift back four currently and it shows. thought Giggs was crap all game. Scholes let the team down. Rooney took his goal superbly after great work by Ronaldo and Ole. they should have put the game to bed v's 10 men at home but I'll take 2-1 as it gives United a fighting chance.
Need a strong ref at home and to get the first goal.
MattW 05 April 2007, 10:03 Fergie should play Heinze at Centre Back and O'Shea at left back, that would stiffen it up a bit. I hope Cathcart gets a run out on Saturday against Pompey to see whether he is up to it.
Saha was bright, thought Rooney looked hungry and was surprised to see Giggs having a poor game.
1-1 or 2-1 the result United need is the same, Roma are a good side and shouldn't be underestimated, however the tie is still wide open.

what? :wonder: Had it been 1-1 then a scoreless draw at home puts United through. United now have to score.

Given the circumstances, I think we came away with a superb result.
The media gave Roma the old David vs. Goliath treatment, bypassing the fact that they're actually a very strong team with a solid spine; Chivu, De Rossi, Totti.
I'm afraid that's a part of Scholes' game that will never change. With all that footballing genius, you'd hope he'd know when not to dive in, as he did for the first yellow. No argument with the second - it wasn't cynical but you cannot afford to stick a leg out in front of an Italian like that.
I thought Wes played well last night, but O'Shea's lack of anything going forward (even a simple searching pass) constantly frustrates me.
Granted, I'm a self-confessed Carrick lover, but I thought he was excellent too, especially so considering Scholes' absence. Very disciplined and kept going all night, ala Hargreaves.
Giggs didn't look fit at all - we missed Park's energy, as Fergie mentioned before kick-off.
Quite confident we'll take it on Tuesday. :)
16vmarc 05 April 2007, 11:11 Disapointing result. I knew we wern't going to win the minute Scholes got sent off. His behaviour last night was a disgrace, hes admitted that hes no good at tackling but he literally does go in and take peoples legs out. I hope fergie really gave him a going over with the hair dryer. He effectively cost us the game. Van Der Sar made some very good saves and I don't think he can be blamed for the result, the defending was shocking though. Fair enough there was no Vidic and Neville but the defence we had should of have made a better job of defending the goal line than they did. Heinze looked good but didn't do much defending! O' Shea wasn't too bad either few decent blocks and passes. Ronaldo had a blinder for about 10 minutes and ran the Italians ragged, Rooney too had a few good runs and a nice finish. Really he should have got 2 imo. You don't start Ole in a game though
I'm glad we got an away goal, I just hope we can do more next week.
2 guys in the pub were nearly scrapping, one said the fans deserved the beating so this big guy got up and said if he didn't shut up he was taking him outside for a beating! You don't go to a football match to get beaten by the Police though. There was one guy with his camera with blood pouring from his head being helped up.

Strange how our opinions differ with regards to the result and performances.
As for your comments on Scholes - if it wasn't for him, we'd be out of the competition already, and no doubt trailing in the Premiership. He's had a stellar season and we've always known he's prone to reckless, silly, naive challenges - a bit like Rooney in a sense.
As for starting with Ole, I think Fergie made the right decision - more European experience and a better goal scoring record than Smudge. There certainly weren't an abundance of options up that end either.
16vmarc 05 April 2007, 12:22 Scholes has had an amazing season yes. He should know better than to go in like that though, especially at this time of the season.
I was expecting him to start with Saha with Ole replacing him later on.

He's been out for four/five weeks, there was no chance of him starting.
16vmarc 05 April 2007, 12:38 True. I just prefer to see Ole coming on, seems to make more of the game this way.
scoobygav555 05 April 2007, 13:52 Fergie made the right decision starting Ole as Saha has been out for so long! To be honest i thought Heinze had a good game, he was putting himself about and made good challenges. All in all i dont think it was a bad result considering we had 10 men and i can see us getting a result at home:)
