Remember this is a hobby so funds are limited......

cant really beat the 100-400L for versatility if you can get on with the push-pull zoom ! Can pick one up for 800 ish, if thats over budget, maybe a 2nd hand one, or the 70-200L F4 with a 1.4 converter !
I have the 100-400 and when the 600mm isnt on the camera, the 100-400 is !

You'll get better pics by moving close than with a huge lens. If you know where your subject is going to be a tripod and remote release may be the answer. Radio triggers have a very long range.

I looked at this scenario long and hard late last year. Came down to 2 choices ultimately, with budget being the main restricting factor...
Sigma 50-500
Canon 100-400
I opted for the Canon, despite the additional cost, as it is lighter and has IS. I don't mind the push-pull mechanism, and the IS is very useful as it means you don't need to carry a monopod.
I do sometimes wish I had the extra reach of the 500mm, but to be honest, the best and clearest shots I have achieved have been reasonably close up. There really is no substitute for proximity.
Have a look at Kerso's ebay store for bargain lenses though. I picked mine up for £885, considerably less expensive than any "proper" shop.
I discounted the 400mm prime as it does restrict you on the range of shots taken.
