i'm building a focus rally car with and impreza engine! i've done all the welding and painting!
fitting it all up now! i have the full car loom! whats the easiest way of wiring up the engine? does anyone know what pin numbers on the ecu i need for live, earth, fuel pump etc
i'm only going to wire it with a toggle switch for ignition and push button start(but thats the easy bit)
any info on wiring!!
car is going up for sale!!! open to offers!

quality mate:thumb: what year is the engine and running gear out of? im doing the same sort of thing with an escort and my running gear is out of a 98 impreza which uses a transponder key, which i havnt got so im not sure what im going to do, you need to seperate everything off the loom that you dont need, im sure someone on here will help you out and i,ll be interested too.

nice project:luxhello:

post a picture of the ecu plug socket end and then we can tell what year the engine is from and then link to a wiring diagram :)

that would be great if you would link me to a diagram!

or go to Chris Palmer's Home Page (http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co.uk/) click on scooby pages and there is the complete workshop manual for 97/98 including the ecu pinout.

Will need a transponder key and re-coding as it is a 97/98

sounds interesting.....

im also fitting a wrx in something else and did cheat by getting the loom sorted by this lot:

www.tsrdragracers.co.uk (http://www.tsrdragracers.co.uk/)

speak to andy. cost me £400 notes to get it done tho - in hindsight i would either a) DIY b) go for alternative management. however at the time it seemed the right choice.

altho also VW related theres some others that have stripped looms for transplant projects on this forum......

VWKD - VW Camper and Beetle Conversion from aircooled to watercooled (http://www.vwkd.co.uk) if you go to the subaru section the wiring/ immobiliser/ source of diagrams etc for various years models has been discussed/ done

there are prob other threads but this is most current:
VWKD - VW Camper and Beetle Conversion from aircooled to watercooled (http://www.vwkd.co.uk/bb/viewtopic.php?t=120) might be worth getting in touch with OVal89, RJES and also Ricola as I know both have fitted turbo lumps to their beetle/speedster and did their own wiring stuff and got round their immobiliser issues. Its year dependent I know on mine (2002 WRX) i needed to retain the barrel and key as it had a different transponder set up to the earlier models. hope this of some help! good luck with the project.

great thanks guys!
what if i get a transponder key and ecu from another car? would that not work?
anyone got one?

or anyone got a key and who will recode it?

does this mean i'll need to use the impreza ignition barrel?

AFAIK Subaru Dealers are the only people that can re-code the ECU to the Key, so you would have to have it up and running, which is a bit chicken and egg.
the alternative would be to use a 97/98 Apexi ECU for the same Subaru loom. this would not require coding.

Top project mate, did you buy this off ebay about a year ago? there was a focus unfinished project on there with scooby floorpan.
Im doing similar with my mk1 mexico, do you have any build pics (fitting of floorpan etc).
I bought a stolen recovered impreza afew years back and put a new lockset in it, a mechanic at the subaru dealers said he could sort the code out for a tenner for me. I contacted the previous owner and managed to get a key off him for it, which i took the chip out of and put in my new keyset. Job done!

hmmmm! i have a problem then!
where will i find an apexi Ecu? Whats the differnce? (i'm new to the subaru game)
how much would i pay for one?

also is the idea of getting an ecu and key from another car a no no? if it would work what would i need from the other car? ecu, key ????

A powerfc can be bought from a number of places.. although wityh this project to an extent as long as you are careful with exhaust and fuel supply it is an added expense you don't need At least not until you need more power.
The powerfc will need mapping for uk fuel, etc..
Supply and fit and map is £800, just map if you get one secondhand is £250.

I would suggest ringing for example HDC SUBARU - parts .. breaking .. salvage .. consumables.. mail order (http://www.hdcsubaru.com), www.essexsubuarubreakers.co.uk, www.grade-asubaru.com and buy an ecu with matching key from a 97/98 they have broke.

when I first bought my engine and anciliaries it came with the wrong key!!!! I went to subaru dealer and thy wouldnt belivve the engine wasnt nicked even though I had all the chassis numebr, reg, reciept from breakers etc. - that along with the fact they thought my project was ridiculous and would never work, plus me not having a runnign set up - all meant they couldnt/ wouldnt recode my key. Fortunatly after an hour rummaging in a bin of keys at the scrappy I found the correct one!

so basically I would go with the ecu and matching key / barrel option as I suspect your local dealership wont want to help.

But IIRC the ECU needs to be plugged into a suitable car, so they can hook the select monitor into the diagnostics port and recode the key to the ECU.

alright Scott:thumb: im in the same boat too with my project, ive also got an engine and running gear out of a 98 but no keys, if i can find someone breaking a 98 car is it just a matter of getting the ecu and transponder key or will i need some of the loom too?

sorry to capture the thread..

just matching key and ecu..

just a rethink.. the JDM cars don't have this immobiliser installed.. so it will only apply if your ecu is a uk one.. and also fitting JDM ecu and swapping the cam and crank and fuel pump pin would also get around the problem if you have a uk engine and loom.

thanks Simon, the engine and running gear is all uk spec, someone else suggested changing to a import ecu, what do you mean by changing the pins? do yo mean the connectors on the crank, cam, fuel pump etc? i havnt actually got the rear part of the loom that goes to the lights and fuel pump etc, is this part of the loom aslo different through out the diferent phases of impreza or could i use one out of a 95 wrx etc?

thanks james:thumb:

the crank and cam pins need to swap and the fuel pump pin need to move..

if you look at the wiring diagram they have a star next to them and note down the bottom etc..

no idea about the rear part of the loom but cannot see a reason why they might be different. Only change I am aware of is the fuel pump connector whcih changed from spade connectors to a retangle plug whcih is the same as a walbro takes. Believe they changed in 99.

immobiliser control module
antenna amp
key
ecu
boost control pack

can anyone help?

also
noticed there are 2 wires for the immobilser coming from the ecu, if i cut the immobilser out and join the 2 wires will that not work??

here is a pic of the imobilizer unit, this is what reads the chip in the key then sends it to the ecu..

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b42/jamesrenton/ecu021.jpg

you can have this one if you still need one as ive ended up having to buy 2 to get a matching transponder chip. make me an offer..
