View Full Version : Porsche Flat Six Subaru?
JDSWORD 29 March 2007, 23:21 Ok I'm looking to do someting different and I'm not sure?
I want to implant, as the title says, into a Scoobie (2 door) shell that I want to buy (which has a roll cage and seem weld for £4.5k) engine is sweet but this has to have headaches. I have other consumables such as drive trains etc. to consider but :norty:
Anybody considered or done?
SPEN555 29 March 2007, 23:32 Look on NAIOC website, one of the tuners took the flat 6 out of a Tribeca IIRC and put it into a scoob along with turbo charging it. Sounded good :D

Tim W 30 March 2007, 08:24 Flat six Subaru engines going into Imprezas has been done, and works quite well...but packaging is the problem, the SVX H6 EG33 engine is a full two cylinders longer than a four pot EJ20/25/257 engine not leaving much room left for the rad or an intercooler.
The newer Legacy H6 EZ30 engine is a different matter, it is only 40mm longer than a four pot, however the early versions had two siamesed exhaust ports per bank which makes efficient twin turbo charging a bit of a pain, ideally you want one of the newer H6 EZ30 engines which has individual exhaust ports which is much more suitable for Turbo charging as our friends over the pond have discovered.
Now to the Porsche engine...you need dimensions, will it fit in the engine bay and leave you room for cooling fans if it's an air cooled engine or a rad and fans if it's watercooled, plus an intercooler seeing as you will have to go for a Porsche turbo lump to make this worthwhile ;)
I can help with dimensions, as i have things to hand:

I think you might find the 911 engine is too wide for the Impreza's engine bay.
Ask if you want some dimensions.

JDSWORD 30 March 2007, 23:40 I have that mid life crisis thing going.
Live in an area that was ''no money'' but (it is beutifull Wales) and car thing going on (I liked my bike 2 Y2K Blade)
Want something that's not been done.. in the uk yet.. got the idea from US
Porsche (Ceyenne) - use the new Legacy engine.
I will not be the rich man in the graveyard...:)

Good on ya :D
Excellent!
I have a youth background in American style Hot Rods, old Fords withs big engines, so transplanting is close to my heart.
After the hot rods came the 911 above in 1988, so i know these early 911's a bit.
The engine is a piece of art, but is complex too.
It is dry sumped, so you need to find a place for a large (as in 12 litres) oil tank. The cooling fan is very tall, and will really be a problem to the bonnet line, and the induction is above that!
All 911 engines have these issues, and I'm not sure which way the 911 engine runs compared to the Impreza! You could have 5 reverse gears, and one forward!!
The Subaru flat 6 is a nice idea, has been done before, but is different enough.
Keep at it, and I'll see you in the same grave yard!(for the penny-less)
CrisPDuk 31 March 2007, 07:53 I'm liking this plan a lot:cool: But not to the point that I'd try it myself, obviously;)
The 911 flat six rotates in the same direction as a scoob engine so that ain't a problem:thumb:
The height thing, I think the fan shoud fit:wonder: But even if it doesn't, you could always use the, still available, 934 style flat fan, with some ducting:cool:
You would need to junk the factory induction kit I reckon, and possibly go for a pair of triple throttle bodies and a mapped set up. Remember emissions are going to be important, it's the age of the car, not the engine, that MOT centres go off. Autofarm would possibly be the guys to speak to?
To make the transplant worthwhile I reckon you would need to be lookng for a 3.3 as a minimum, or maybe even a 3.6 from a 964:norty:
The dry sump tank shouldn't be a problem, I know people who've done the flat 6 into VW camper thing, and they reckon you can get away with less than 12L, you just need to do more regular oil changes and run a big feck off oil cooler:D
PS: Graham, I've said it before, but I reckon it bears repeating, Nice 911:cool::thumb:
Thanks for the kind remarks on the Old Banger!
Fab car.
