View Full Version : WA lens advice...
ChefDude 15 March 2007, 17:52 I'm off to machu piccu in september and need a wide angle lens and a tripod for less than 500 - I have to save some money and i'm not allowed to buy any gLass until december when i'll get a 16-35mm II for christmas/birthday.
working on the theory it won't get used wider than f8 and it will be on a tripod, what are my lens choices? (sample images are always welcome :))
ChefDude 15 March 2007, 17:53 and it's going to be on a 1.3x crop
555-Shaggy 15 March 2007, 17:56 I was going to suggest the EF-S 10-22 but you've just discounted that. Shame, cos I love mine. I think it is a very good lens. I guess the 17-40 (I think) is out.
ChefDude 15 March 2007, 18:03 i was looking at the 35mm f/2, but am still wondering what other possibilities there are
Pumpkin 15 March 2007, 18:05 You can use the Sigma 10-20mm EX on a x1.3 crop sensor. You get vignetting at the widest end until 11mm when used without additional filters (info according to Photography Monthly mag).
ChefDude 15 March 2007, 18:21 interesting :)
doesn't leave much room for a tripod tho :(
Pumpkin 15 March 2007, 18:37 There is one on the POTN forums for sale @ £ 230. Leaves some room for a tripod.

I wouldn't think 35 x 1.3 = 45mm is very wide angle.:wonder:
I have the EF-S 10-22 and it's great, I also have the 17-40L which is even better. The 10-22 does suffer from vignetting wide open with anything on the front.
On the Prime front the 20mm & 24mm f/2.8 lenses are in your price range, I've no idea how good they are though as I'm a lazy git who prefers to zoom ;)
I got shot of my 24 f/2.8, dissapointing images. My 16-35L blew it in to the weeds. If f/8 is no problem you could get the 17-40L?
Daryl 16 March 2007, 12:15 Sigma 15-30?

What tripod are you after? I can recommend Benro (http://benro.cn/Product/1/pa1.html), Gitzo copies at a fraction of the price. :)
ChefDude 16 March 2007, 12:19 that tripod looks pretty good
i realise an L lens will be a lot better, but this exercise is about "not buying a lens" but getting a lens ;) you all have other halves i'm sure and know what i mean
Pumpkin 16 March 2007, 12:20 IIRC the Sigma 15-30 can't take a front mounted filter
ChefDude 16 March 2007, 12:21 tbh, i love being there looking at landscapes (anyone been to Mt nobu in Jordan?), but are not really too bothered about capturing them. when I get the 16-35 f/2.8L II, it will still be for portraits - just with lots of negative space lol
edited to say, the peru trip is costing 10 grand, so i feel obliged to capture some landscapes lol
Geezer 16 March 2007, 12:49 What about the Tokina 12-24 f4? On a 1.3 crop that's still mighty wide, and constant f4, so it's not too slow. Gets very good reviews too.
Get it for £339 from Microglobe and that leaves you £160 for a tripod, sorted!
Geezer

The main reason I started taking Landscape pics, in my younger & fitter days, was to remember being there and capture what I saw then as well as I could.
It has now progressed to the point that the reason I am there is to take pics so the places I go to are determined by the photographs I try to take, even down to trying to find out where & when someone else has taken a decent pic and understanding why. :)
For £10k I would want a pretty decent record of that to look back on for the rest of my life! :D Have fun! :thumb:
I'm still dissapointed with my pics from Australia & New Zealand in 94 :( One day I will go back with some better kit and a much better technique! ;)
Sigma 15-30?

I'm thinking of selling my Sigma 15-30 now I have the 16-35L. It's a good performer and I'd give it a thumbs up but it's not much use wide open, gets good/very good at f/7 ish, very sharp, less flare than the 16-35L in many situations.
