Ok,

I may soon take the plunge and replace my current 35mm Canon body with a 400D.

Now, I've been looking around, and found that Jessops and John Lewis are selling the camera + 18 - 55mm lens at the same price, but the 3 yr warranty at Jessops is £60 vs the JL 3 yr warranty at £45.

Two things:-

1) Is it worth getting an extended warranty for the 400D? (effectively an insurance policy, I know)
2) Is there likely to be any difference between the Jessops and JL warranties?

I know a lot of people on here have bought 400Ds, so would be interested to hear who has got an extended warranty, or if it's not thought to be worthwhile.

Cheers,

DaveD

1) do you take care of your kit? is it covered on your household cover?

Saw this yesterday

I bought mine from Jessops in October, which was price matched with the cheapest I could find on the net at the time. I took out the extended warranty, as it also included accidental damage cover, with a new for old if it was beyond economical repair.

Well I just bought one this week from Curry's they tried to sell me an extended warranty for £3.99 or so per month decided not to bother cos I think my household insurance might cover it. They were prepared to undercut Jessops price and after some haggling got the camera +1GB high speed lexar card + soft case for £500

Thanks for the comments.

For the record, I've had the 35mm Canon body for over 4 years with no problems, and I also have a Praktica that is over 15 years old.

The Praktica is the camera that tends to get the most abuse, although the canon is no longer just reserved for 'best'. The cameras can get chucked around a bit when covering motorsport, and also suffer from the elements (rain / dust / heat / cold) - I don't keep my camera at home because the weather isn't right!

Think I will go for the extra cover, and see what I can haggle off the price....

Jessops are pricematching other magazine adverts at the moment. Advert & coupon in Practical Photography where I got these prices from...

Mifsuds - £ 499 for 400D & kit lens
Warehouse Express - £ 480

Thanks,

The prices for the 400D + 18 - 55mm lens that I found the other day were around £475.
I already have two other lenses, but need the wide angle kit lens to cope with the 1.6x crop.

I'll have a scan through the 'library' in WH Smiths tonight, before seeing what the current shop prices are, and what they're willing to match.

they say they're willing to match any advertised price in a magazine, providing its in stock and not a promotional offer.

I'm still getting to grips with the 400D i bought a couple of weeks ago. I purchased it in Currys as i was offered a reasonable discount through knowing someone who works there. I turned down the extra cover they were offering as i've never once needed it yet on anything electrical i've purchased. Time will tell if my luck'll hold!

Thanks again for all the comments.....I now have a 400D :D :thumb:

Got it from John Lewis, who were persuaded to more than match the Jessops price next door, and the cost was less than £470 (from £499!).

I still have the option of applying for the extended warranty up to one month after purchase. I think I will get this for the security of knowing that it's covered for malfunction / damage for 3 years - not bad for an equivalent cost of less than £1.50 a month.

I look forward to using this camera, and hopefully, it will also teach me how to use some of the features on the 35mm body that I've not tried yet!

Thanks Chris!

Had my point and shoot for some time now, but became ever more frustrated that it wouldn't do what my 35mm would. Now I only have to choose which body to stick on which lens! ;)
