Just got an online quote for a 748s.

I'm 31, just got my license, £4k value with 4k annual mileage, passenger cover and commuting included, garaged in SE10 London, Comprehensive cover.

£1400!!!!!

I appreciate I am a new rider, but I'm not 17 and the bike is only worth just over twice that amount!!!

Would it make a big difference to delete commuting and / or pillion?

May be moving to surrey imminently which will undoubtedly help.

Have to say it's about £500 more than I was expecting and is almost enough to make me totally reconsider :(

Thoughts?

Don't go comprehensive. What do you think comp does that tpft with a few extras doesn't? Mind you, these days it's not much cheaper sometimes.

Thats an expensive bike to drop.
You're a newbie rider.
You will drop it.
The insurance company know this.

When you drop it, they have calculated it will cost more than your premium to repair but they get you on the excess...

If you want cheaper insurance, get a cheaper bike. Sorry mate but there it is.

Screwd.

Hadn't thought about it really, always gone comp with my cars so it was just 2nd nature to quote it.

How many of you run tpft instead of comp?

Thanks for the last comment btw...first prize for stating the obvious :thumb:

I knew it would be expensive, but nearly £1500 for a £4k bike is taking the Michael...

My mate has literally passed his test - he bought a CBR 600 and he as quoted ridiculous prices (he's 33 btw) so what he did spoke to them and has insured it TPO - although he covers it in chains and alarms his insurance is less than 400 quid. they told him at Carole nash that after 12 months his insurance will drop like mad because he'll have a yesr no claims.

Obviously his security is first rate and he rides like a vicar (when his wife is looking):)

Thanks...looks like that is the way to go. There is literally no way anyone could steal it from my home address despite being on the border of a nasty area (Deptford) and I'm unlikely to ever leave it anywhere on the street overnight. And I definitely don't plan to drop it although I do understand it's likely even if only when manoevring!!!

your age plus the fact that you have just passed is what goes against you... what they call a 'born again'

I was insured TPFT on my 2000 955i for £149 the best quote I could get on my 05 R1 was £390 TPFT so it really does depend on the bike – I got comp for £570 from insurance express which was really good – but the worst was £3400 and the average was £1100

Cheers
Iain

Ed stay well away from Bennetts, I've been riding 13/14 years now and Bennetts have never even come close on my premiums. I have found that Yamaha insurance always provide me with some of the best quotes and am still with them now after using them when I got my R1 4 years ago, then a GSXR 750 and now a Fireblade.

MCE did the job for me and with my 200SX track car.

I personally find Carole Nash, Bennetts, Devitt way OTT. Good ones I reckon are Ebike, H&R and Express Insurance (the latter being Suzuki affiliated).

Motorcycle Direct, and if you go via MotorbikesToday then I'll be grateful...

Otherwise I'd stay away from Bennets as they're thieving *******s (I know, but they're worse than most) and e-Bike will either be ultra competitive or way out of the ball park...

Carole Nash were good for me on my CBR600...

£390 tpft when I was 29, 0years NCB and just passed my test
£245 fully comp at 30 and 1years NCB.

I suppose its due to newbies dropping bike in the first year, as proven by my quotes and experience the price drops like a stone after a year.

ED, grab a copy of MCN tomorrow and go through all the insurers in the back of the paper. You could try these guys Wicked Quotes - the motorcycle insurance specialist | low cost motorcycle insurance | insurance for all motorcyles | motorcycle insurance online (http://www.wickedquotes.com/) as they are quite competitive or https://www.hrinsurance.co.uk/motorcycle/motorcycle.asp

Call as many as you can, you'll get a quote for under a grand I guarantee
