Ok Guys, Ive decided to jack my job, house and car and am going travelling for at least a year:luxhello:
Now I am going to be taking my Nikon D80 and small pocket size digi cam.
Question is what lens should I take or should I buy one in bangkok, or is it cheaper in singapore or malaysia
Im thinking of buying a 18-200VR lens as it would be a great versatile lens, I also would prob take 50 1.8 prime, not sure if I would need anything longer?
Just interested in your thoughts and experiences, and should I buy any filters and that sort of stuff over there?
Thanks in advance for your help and advice:)

Bangkok is quite expensive for photo equipment. I don't know about Singapore or Malaysia but with the price of phone calls these days it wouldn't hurt to ring around (Singaporeans speak English lah)
Also it may be worth finding out whether you can buy it tax-free as you are going out of the country for so long.

Thanks for the advice kiwi, I have been looking on some websites and your quite correct Bangkok seems to be quite expensive I was very surprised.
Anyone else have any info or advice for travelling and places to but equipment?

I wouldn't have thought you would need too much reach, nor the bulk that it would give you, so the 18-200 VR should be a fantastic travel lens.
However, I would imagine you will see some great landscapes on your travels, so if your budget will stretch to it, get the Sigma 10-20 or the Tokina 12-24. Both reasonably proces, and both get very good reviews.
That should pretty much cover everything you need at a resaonable price and not be too much to carry around..

Singapore should be a good bit cheaper than the UK, but you need to know where to buy from to get the best deals.
Have a look at this thread (http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1032&message=19191766&q=singapore&qf=m) to get an idea of where to buy. Be prepared to haggle!

I would personally take a 17-55 f/2.8
great lansdscape/portrait/reportage lens, which will be fast enough in whatever buildings you enter as well as outside :)
