Question

changing the front brakes on my My98 turbo from std 2 pots to sti-4 4 pots

what do i need to get with regards to pads, discs and accessories (discs need replacing anyway)? i have recently changed the pads to mintex 1144's, can i keep these for the 4 pots or do i need a different set and how much cash am i looking to part with? i want a cheap option but still with the quality and reliability

cheers in advance
chris

Oh, btw has anyone got any pics of these calipers???

Quality and reliability!
You'll be lucky the subaru four pots are CRAP in standard trim, discs crack, and they fade when pushed!
Save your pennies and buy AP or Brembo!
I thought I'd found the answer, but even what I've got are now cracked.
I'm not gonna say what I've got, cos I don't wanna start world war four!

Chris, there's nothing wrong with the Subaru 4-pot caliper except that it weighs a ton (as it's not made of alloy). The STi caliper is the same as fitted to all cars from MY99 onwards, including the P1.

The problem is the standard discs, and there are lots of upgrade options. Godspeed have got a good reputation for their 4-pot upgrade kit with alloy-belled discs. Sorry, no contact details to hand. Run a search.

Richard.

Hi there,

just gotta add my 2p worth here...

... AP/ Brembo..... if these are the 'racing' style brakes, just where on earth are you guys driving, I race a cbr 600, and i'll be just about ready for race brakes - they need heating up see? lots.

On the road, race brakes don't really have much relevance- if they are true 'race thorough breds'... admittedly on 4 wheels it may be a little different - but not much.

there is nowt wrong with the discs/4-pots of the STi set up IMHO. They are suited to each other in terms of materials, and yes they wear.... when u guys r saying they crack, is this after a good thrashing then a quick wash with the hose to clean the luverly calipers then ;-))

ps: please don't hit me if u don't agree wiv me. only opinions my friends...

Hi Mikey.

You ever taken your STi for a spirited lap of Milton Keynes (at legal speeds) or Donington?

Try it. Then your standard brakes will be thoroughly bu99ered. Unfortunately, Donington is a favourite track for Sccobs and v hard on brakes; on the other hand, Snetterton is a different matter altogether... (Nice long straights for cooling between corners.)

The Scoob's standard brake problem is that they fade too easily. So people fit up-rated pads, which then exceed the ability of the discs, which then results in warping and cracking.

The brake best brake upgrades talked about here are not racing brakes at all, but powerful calipers designed for road use (durable protective coating and dust-sealed pistons) and quality grooved discs preferably with alloy bells. Pads are 'fast road' types - eg Pagid 1155, Ferodo DS2500 - which work well from cold but can also hack it when hot.

Hi all,

there we have it, you mention donnington... I know it well. As I say, I race a bike... but I wouldn't expect a road car (even an STi) to do the biz there - it would be great safe fast and fun and admittedly, for those who like the tracks, yes do something with the brakes, suspension, tyres, etc, but that's not where I was coming from.

Our scoob gets well fed with some very hard driving, yes really, and it's up for it. But tracks are where those sort of mods are really telling, not the road.
