I'm booked in for a re-map at andy's place on March 2nd,
getting an apexi ecu fitted. What's involved and roughly how long is
it likely to take? I've gathered that a lot of the mapping takes place
on the road, any tips apart from arriving with as much v-power as possible?

lol. He only took 2 hours with my P1. Apexi PFC. Me and the girlfriend went into the town for something to eat while he sorted it. Top man, the car is absolutely superb now. The only problem I have right now is hesitation on acceleration in 2nd gear. It will boost to a point, and then kick me back. I've been told its fuel starvation, as its happening when I have less than 1/4 tank of petrol. However, it didnt happen before the mods and map, so I'm trying to figure out a reason behind it all. I've posted the topic in General Technical.

You wont regret the mapping session though, and the trip home will be superb :)

What other modifications do you have?

I was thinking 4 hours was a bit long! Mine took about 2 hours aswell.

If your process is the same as mine, then this is what happens:

You drive into his garage (if you can find it :D) and he will set about fitting the ECU, sussing out what has been done to the car and setting up the laptop. A tube with sensor (AFR?) at the end will be fed out of the engine bay round to the exhaust and you are ready to go.

He will take you out onto the A1 dual carriageway and get you to do a number of runs in a set gear (3rd or 4th) from 3,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm. Can be a bit frustrating doing it in between the traffic! After this, he will take you onto a quieter road and get you to do a number of runs through the gears. That was pretty much it for me. Try and drive as you normally would as he willl be mapping the car to suit.

How does a replacement ecu affect the immobiliser in the keys? i had (looks like wrongly) assumed he fiddled with the ecu in the car and didn't replace it.

The Apexi replaces the standard ECU and is generally used more often on the older pre 98/99 ish classics as their ECUs could not be re-mapped. After then, the Impreza had a re-mappable ECU (ECUTEK).

You can still use the Apexi in the newer cars, but for most people the ECUTEK re-map is sufficient.

I've been to Andy 3 times now. Was nervous/excited the first time, as didn't know what to expect. Rossyboy's post is pretty much what happens. Testing gears in ranges, under load, etc.

Andy is a great bloke, and don't be scared to ask a question, no matter how silly you think it is. He is very helpful and understanding. Plus he's a big kid at heart!!

* And remember, when you're talking to him in the car, he might not hear as he has the det cans on. I didn't realise at first and was blabbering away. :lol1:

me and a buddy paid Andy Forrest to come down to the lovely frozen wastes of Oldham. had to pay extra for his trip and expenses but i will say it was worth every penny. has top be the best mod i have done.

my car just pulls from low down (TD04) and rockets up to nearly 6000rpm.

lighly modded but still a very rapid road car (in my eyes)

Cheers for your input,my sti wagon will be fully de-catted this weekend but apart from a k&n panel filter the car is as it came via the factory. This car is used daily for my journey's to work and back so it's got to remain reliable BUT hopefully pull along with a few extra ponies.

I think he's out of the country at the moment mate..

His prices don't include VAT. I bought a hybrid turbo of him last week and have to say he was excellent to deal with. Answered all my stupid questions and REALLY went out of his way to make sure I got the turbo on time! Couldnt ask for more!! I just wish he was more local so he could map my car. I am considering making the trip now though after his efforts. Very impressed :D
