View Full Version : First Proper pictures with 400D and 70-300
Scooby-kid 05 February 2007, 22:10 Hi guys, Sunday was the first time i have been out with the sole purpose of finding some good subjects. I went to Rosliston Forestry centre hoping to find all the birds of prey to be outside, but no, just one ma-hoosive golden eagle... ahh, never mind :thumb:.
Nothing has been done the colour of these images, I have only cropped some of them, and done a 75% resize using Microsoft Digital Immage Pro.
There are more to come, but photobucket has decided to give me a fair old wait:Whatever_.

mattstant 06 February 2007, 16:45 N0 13 is a cracker
the rest I,m afraid just have no depth or point of interest
AndyC_772 06 February 2007, 18:15 I'm afraid I have to agree with Matt - only #13 does anything for me at all. Birds of prey are one of my favourite photographic subjects - if you want a real challenge, try capturing one in flight!
When photographing any animal, always make absolutely sure you focus on the eyes - it looks as though you've focused on the side of the beak instead in this case, though it's hard to tell on a web-sized image.
As for the other pics, ask yourself: which ones would you have taken if you hadn't just bought a new camera and wanted to try it out?
Nevertheless, there are a few interesting details there which it would help to concentrate on, such as the water droplets and frost on the grass in no. 2 or the patch of light in no. 3. Get in close and concentrate on just the detail that makes the picture worth taking - and if you go out and don't see anything worth taking pictures of, then don't take any. Go somewhere else the next day instead rather than diluting your portfolio.
One of the hardest things in photography is picking out worthwhile subjects and working out how to portray them to best effect; master that skill and the whole world will look different, as you look around looking for photo opportunities.
Scooby-kid 06 February 2007, 19:30 Looknig back, I see what you are getting at. Very Random things, I think I wil have to go Back at the weekend to find some birds!

Totally agree with this. After a while, I started to look at the world in a totally different way and you will see things that you never saw before. Suddenly bad looking stuff can look pretty or interesting. Enjoy it as much as you can and let yourself go out in the field. ;)

Don't be downheartened Scott. I'm sure we've all got loads of pictures like that on our hard disks :) from some time or another.
We will almost certainly have loads that we consider "crap" :lol1:
As well as the bird shots, I quite like 6 and 9.
Take on board what has been said above. In addition, there is a real temptation to just shoot away with digital because it doesn't cost any more to do that.
Try and think what you would do if you were using a film camera, where every time you pressed the shutter button you had one less available shot to take. Try and make every shot count, if you know what I mean?
On the plus side, it looks like your lens is decently sharp and your exposures are fine :thumb:

good attitude
look at other peoples pictures on google images/galleries to plant some seeds in your mind of what you would like to picture.
Bateman 07 February 2007, 12:34 :) Try car shows, something other than jap ones. Rod, classic cars, motorsport and VW aircooled or water pumper. All these cars have different shapes and colours. I like the top fuel events and like to see whats going on in the 'pit' area in which you can find some interesting shots. Santa pod has a range of events through the year. always good
I posted some up i took with my Sony last year in this gallery. have a look.
DanTheMan 03 April 2007, 22:24 Out of interest which 70-300 was that ?
ps I think your pics are cool ;)
Scooby-kid 05 April 2007, 18:38 It is the Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6 APO DG Macro :thumb:.
