Question

I have installed the Audigy Platinum and am trying to connect the digital (SPDIF) out to a Yamaha AV amp. Local hifi shop suggested and made up a phono lead for it - works fine from the digital out on the CD player to the DVD in on the AMP, but nothing at all from the soundcard (I have enabled digital output only as per the manual).

Anyone any ideas? Have I got the wrong sort of cable? When you connect a DVD player to an AV amp has the DVD already converted the SPDIF signal (if so, why only one lead required?).

thanks in advance

I am not 100% sure that will work, SPDIF is a SONY/PHILLIPS DIGITAL INTERFACE it's used mostly in music recording for DAT machines in Studios. Why don't you just use the line outs?

Can you not just take an optical out from the live drive and into the amp?

(though im guessing your about to shoot this down by saying you got the audigy package without the live drive).

Both make good points, I'm showing my ignorance re SPDIF!! - not entirely sure what it is other than it's digital.

I do have the optical out - would this get round the problem? (The Yamaha has an optical in).

any idea where to get a decent length of optical cable (circa 5m)?

cheers

Spdif is a standard and should work. The problem could be that, if the card is like previous creative labs cards, the digital sinc is set to 48khz and not 44.1khz. Depending on your AV equipment it might not be able to work with 48khz. This may no longer be the case, but it's a possibily. If that is the case you will have the same problem with the optical cable. However, could also be a routing issue. There should be some sort of app that allows you to specifiy outputs.

If you want to try an optical cable, most decent music shops can supply them, a 5m would be very expensive. If you let me know where you are I can sugest a few.
