Our digital camera came to an abrupt end last night after leaving it on the car boot and then driving off. Went back for it but it was completely destroyed, looked like it had been driven over a few times.

Anyway, its a good excuse to get a DSLR.

Is £475 a good price for a 400D with lens?

I don`t know where you got your price from. Worth looking here if you haven`t already.

Canon EOS 400D Lens Kit (EF-S 18-55mm) (http://www.camerapricebuster.com/Canon_EOS_400D_Lens_Kit_EF-S_18-55mm_pc.html)

although StuV on the Canon POTN forums was selling some BNIB 400D kits before Xmas for £ 430. He gets them direct from a contact at Canon.

Found this in stock locally @ £499 with the Lens Kit, although i spoke to a local Jessops and they slated the lens that comes with the camera.

So, im off 2moro to collect it, lens and all. They did offer me a 1gb compact flash card at a total of £549 but im sure i could find memory cheaper elsewhere.

Does the camera come with even a small memory card, just to get started with?

Also, how bad is the lense really? Oh, and lastly, what other lens would you recommend to replave the OE one?

I think the quality of the 18-55 kit lens varies the most. Its a starter lens and will serve to get you up and running, and is capable of taking some very nice shots. Ultimate build quality and image quality is somewhat lacking, but for effectively £ 50 or so it does deserve its place in many peoples kit bags.

Replacements - Sigma do a £ 250 or so version which is f 2.8 and higher quality. Canon do various L level glass, or the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS or EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 IS

However you may find its good enough for what you want to do, and you find your true love lies in long distance bird photography or motorsport and you then choose to invest in lenses suitable for this.

Thanks for that, alot of it lost me completely, but the summary made it obvious, its not a bad lense and its worth having it for the extra £'s

Thanks again.
