Perhaps suggest a budget, because the whole 'P&S' genre covers quite a price range:)

I just got a Canon Powershot 710IS online from Jessops. They are selling them down from around £350 to £199. Use your nectar card or do a search for Jessops promo codes and a further 10% is possible. 7mp, Image stability, 6x optical zoom and full manual operation if required. I bought it as a practical alternative to a 30D and so far it's impressive.

I'm very pleased with my Canon IXUS 800IS, which you can now pick up from Amazon for £200. You might be able to get slightly better image quality elsewhere (look for the physically biggest sensor you can find, not the number of pixels on it), but for portability and ease of use I think you'd struggle to do much better.

You should have a look at the Canon A640 (10 MP) & A630 (8 MP). These cameras have some very useful features like: manual mode, flip & twist lcd, AA-batteries (if you are in the field and the camera is short on batterylife, you can buy batteries anywhere to keep on shooting), still pretty good ISO at such high Pixel count.

I bought my dad the A630 (8 MP version) for christmas and he seems pretty happy so far. :) Just make sure to ge a bigger SD-Card with it.

Very happy with my Canon Powershot G7 which is available from Amazon for £312.. it's built like a tank (important for the stick I'll be giving it), Av, Tv, full manual etc. Downsides? No flip and twist LCD. red-eye problems and no RAW but otherwise *plenty* of bang for the buck, great handling, a viewfinder(!), grid display for those rule-of-thirds moments, and loads of other neat features.

Did I also mention it's great fun at parties? :) My nephew as shot by my son:
