Hi All,
I would like to subscribe to a good English/US photo magazin. Since I couldn't find any good ones in German language (except one called 'Naturfoto'), maybe you can suggest an English magazin.

If possible, the magazin should include:
- Great outdoor pictures (nature/architecture/abstracts)
- Individual Stories of a specific topic (cultures/animals, etc.)
- Interviews of pro photographers
- SLR or DSLR (it doesn't have to be a digital focused mag)

What I DON'T want to see in the magazin:
- Too many technical information (I use the internet for such info)
- Bad quality pictures
- Consumer P&S camera coverage/tests
- Buying guides, etc. ;)

Can somebody give me any tips for my 'ideal' magazine?

Many thanks in advance.
Daniel

Photography Monthly, Practical Photography, Outdoor Photography.

Richard.

PS Edited to add, maybe French? Chasseur d'Image (Frenchie's fav I think) or Reponses Photo.

I'd suggest for Outdoor Photography given your criteria above :thumb:

Hi Chris. Yes and no. I no longer have any full-time association with any magazine, although I know most of the staff from all of them pretty well (except Chasseur d'Image - proles from provence :lol1: ).

I like Photography Monthly mainly because of Will Cheung (high editorial standards) who has been a mate for many years and I have his Xmas card in front of me. A wonderful B&W image worthy of anyone who's held a camera.

And though I don't read Outdoor Photography much, I'm delighted it's survived in a very difficult market (and editor Keith Wilson looks almost as old as I do which is a relief :D ).

Beware there are two new digital mags out there now - Digital SLR Photography and Digital SLR User, plus another pro-mag. The D-SLR revolution has kicked it all off again.

But it's distribution that is key - if it's not in the shops, then no sales. Subscription sales in the UK are generally under 5% of total sales. Nothing to do with how good the magazine is, frankly (eg ScoobyMag). Tesco/Sainsbury don't give a damn, which is sad but commercial reality. Which means that big publishing companies like Emap (my old home), IPC and Future probably hold the keys.

Sorry, but you did ask ;)

Richard.

Professional Photographer is good, but I doubt what your looking for. Maybe worth a quick flick through next time your in the news agent. Whilst not really a "this is how its done" mag. The pics are stunning and it does have a few good tips in.

Thanks guys!
Next time I am at the airport (it's basically the only place that have international mags), I will check if some of those are available to have a look at. Eventough I had French at school, I unfortunately have lost quite a bit of it and am to lazy to learn it again. Therefore I am more interested in English mags. :D
Thanks again, Daniel

I subscribe to Practical Photography (actually really for the free gifts I got :) ) and also buy Photography Monthly which I think I prefer. I occassionally pick up other magazines but those two are the ones I get every month.

Only by name. He's on one of the new mags now, I think. Digital SLR User?

He used to edit digital photographer now and again I think, he's local to me (Dorset), helped each other out a couple of times, just wondered if you knew him, it's a small world... :)

Don't get me started on photo magazine publishing... :D

One thing's for sure, things ain't the same. UK market leader, Practical Photography, now sells less than half it used to - 120,000 plus per month in 1980-ish. But it did have a brilliant editor ;) Also, Amateur Photographer is now around a quarter of its 100,000 peak sales.

The internet has changed the (specialist) magazine landscape for ever. And websites like this don't help  :lol1: Such is media life.

Also, it is now quite easy for one or two people to produce a very good magazine with the help of freelances/email that they might not have ever met! But getting it on sale in major outlets is obviously quite important, so if you have the likes of FHM, Zoo, Nuts, Maxim, Grazia, Closer and other associated crap in your portfolio, you have some leverage to use on the rest of your mags. If not, it's a hard and stony road, usually to obvilion :(

How Keith Wilson's 'Outdoor Photography' survives is a publishing mystery to me. Good luck to him :) Maybe he doesn't sleep too well, but I bet he works his nuts off and is a top guy (even for an Aussie ;) ).

Richard.
