Photo Competition Round 32 - Sub Zero ......Entries

Hi all,

I hope i've done this right. If not can somebody point me in the right direction.

It seems now would be the time to get some nice photos of ice formations (natural or man made), frosts or indeed anything that could fall under the category. Now you’ve just got to hope for some cold weather.

Rules

1. Image must have been taken within the competition period, which is from Tuesday 2nd January 2007 to Friday 2nd February.
2. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
3. Image overall will not exceed 300kb (defined as 307,200 bytes).

If a submitted image contravenes rules 1 ,2 or 3 could people please mention this in the discussion thread so that the poster can fix it, some advice to the poster about how they might rectify the problem might be handy. No image which breaks any of these rules will be included in the voting thread so let's try to avoid a submission being left out due to not meeting the rules.

4. Each entrant can change their posted image at any time (using edit function) up to the closing date for submissions which is midnight UK local time on Friday 2nd February 2007.
5. Maximum of three images per entrant.
6. Digital manipulation is allowed in order to correct technical issues. Sharpening, levels, contrast and colour adjustments are allowed as is the cloning out of minor defects.
7. If you feel the need to use other digital tools or effects then these must be fully documented so that people can learn how to use such tools/effects.
8. Image must be hosted so that it appears correctly in the competition thread using something like photobucket or a direct link to the photo if you cannot do this.
9. Image must be titled but not on the image itself, i.e. some bold text naming the image should be posted above it. In addition, to benefit others, please post some details below the pic e.g. EXIF data or just aperture, shutter speed, exposure compensation, equipment used etc. (this is a learning exercise after all).

10. There will be no posts in the Entries thread other than those for the posting of competition images.
11. There are no judges, only votes from Scoobynet members, their collective decision is final.
12. Voting should be 2nd-9th February, anyone with a Scoobynet log-in will be eligible to vote, not just those submitting pictures.
13. Images will meet the requirements of the ScoobyNet T&Cs
14. Winner gets to choose the theme for the next round.

Good luck to everyone!

Daz.

on the roof of my car.

Its just a shame that it was with my phone camera as my Nikon CP5700 has broken...still...not long (hopefully) until I get my Canon 400d

Lovely bit of frost, that :thumb:

Good theme, too. I'll have my camera with me whenever I can, but got this a couple of weeks ago on my phone...

Let's hope we get some cold weather then!!! The temperatures around here are really warm for the season and there's very little or no snow around unless you go high up in the mountains and even then there's nothing much to write home about...much to the dismay of the ski resorts.

all the snow is coming to France this week apparently, i think SNetters living abroad should be banned from this comp for having an unfair advantage ;):D

LOL! Just had our first decent fall yesterday but nothing on the low ground (thankfully as my tyres are shot). Still, it does make the mountains look pretty. I have an idea for this one but it depends on....well, I'll not say in case it doesn't work out, but it does involve me wrapping up extra well :)

Well it's 11 degrees here in grey and miserable blighty :(

No chance of frost this week so the freezer is still looking the best option so far ;)

Looks like I'll need to try and think of something arty to do with ice cubes too - here's one from a while back with a big block of ice, a hammer and a red flash:

Not much better here Chris. It's about 12 degrees and the snow we had from the other day is melting really, really fast. My little fella has had the first school ski trip cancelled already due to lack of snow and we shelled out a small fortune buying new gear and season passes so it had better hurry up and get here.

<grumpy>If I'd know this was going to happen I would've bought a set of Defi gauges</grumpy>

Oh gawd, is nowhere safe from CBB? :)

Looks like any plans I had for sub-zero pictures are disappearing fast each and every day :( These mountains should be covered in snow about 6 feet deep by now...took this snap at lunchtime and the weather is so mild you could almost have a barbeque!

Wizzbang: A comment for whatever it's worth - you've used warm (red) tones in a 'below zero' image - try the same image with cold blue tones/ gelling on the flash?

here's a question, what with the new image restrictions on SN, can we upload any size to say photobucket (within reason of course, was thinking 1024 wide maybe a little bigger) as it will still be small on the thread page but if you want to see it bigger you can, pretty sure the reason for 800 wide was for viewing the thread quickly without huge pictures taking up the bandwidth etc. now that's not a problem...

posted it at 800 for now

thought it would be interesting if people posted what camera, lens, flashgun etc. they've used (i know most people do already) so to give people an idea what kit was used to get the picture as i sometimes wonder myself :)

The pictures are still the same size, so the bandwidth is the same. The server is telling the browser to reduce them in width, but it isn't reducing the number of bytes in the picture. Interestingly, it depends which browser you use - for one particular picture I posted in the 'favourite pictures of 2006' thread the original size was 806x604.

In Firefox it is shown as 640x480, but is still the same number of bytes. It is pixellated due to the way the image size is reduced.

In IE7 it is shown as 480x360, same number of bytes. It is badly pixellated.

I was going to suggest that we posted pictures that were no wider than 640, but if IE is showing them as 480 then we might as well give up...

i bow to your superior knowledge :thumb: i just hate seeing decent photos shrunk down to postage stamps :(

I still don't understand the reason for reducing anything which is 800 pixels wide or less?

Neither do I Chris. Just more stupid bloody ideas IMHO. If it ain't broke why do they keep fixing at it?
