I’ve bought a 54 plate sti fantastic car! But the radio sounds pants, my question is= are the speakers crap or is it the head unit to blame or both?

The head unit is definately something to be replaced first!
Then you should replace the front speakers with something abit more substantial.
Treat yourself to a quality headunit first though ;)

speakers-fit infinity 6.5 " components in the front and 5" infinitys in the rear doors,dont forget to get some dyna-mat in there and this basic setup will sound great

Headunit wise I personally bought a Pioneer, however Alpine, Kenwood are also great choices.
Depends what you really want out of it. . . the more you spend on it the more features you will have.
Features to look for:
4x50 watts output...
Hi volt RCA preouts [(6 volt if poss)if you will be using external amps]
ability to play burnt CDs (mp3s, wma wav etc)
Cd changer control
iPod adapter ready - or ability to plug in your MP3 player via an auxillary input.

There are so many out there it is hard to recommend an individual unit, if all you want to do is listen to the radio :)

As for speakers, a lot of people use Infinity, Alpine, Kenwood and Pioneer. If you won't be running external amps then the power from the headunit will be ok.... they certainly won't get damaged as the most headunits put out is around 50-60 watts peak power.

Make sure you get speakers which can fit in your current speaker holes.. unless you fancy making spacers or getting a saw out.

Look around and don't rush - go to some shops and have a listen.

Speakers are rubbish, got to change the HU and speakers to get any quality. If funds are tight IMO replace speakers 1st. :)
