Is there any reason why you can't put them into cold water tanks? I know they are found in a lot of toilet cisterns now, but the ballvalve in my cold tank makes a hell of a row. (Droning hum, rather high pitched). Was wondering if replacing it with a Torbeck one would help?

You should use a fluid master which is similar to a torbeck but designed for cwst's. Also bending the arm slightly sideways on your existing bv may sort the problem.
