Hi folks,

I'm not a builder and will be doing it all myself with a bit of lifting from mates.

Start of garage,i dug this 6m bit by hand one day

Cheers Ron,try to be neat, getting a bit quicker now as well, just doing it in my spare time, its only about 2 degrees here in the day so waiting for rise then will get the bricks up to block level, wanted to practice on the unseen areas first thats why i never did the brick corners first.

Few more pics

how much is this costing in materials?
could you give a very basic breakdown?
do you have previous experiance in building?

paul w

No experience at all just what the guys on the plot behind have shown me and i have alot of common sense and can do most things.Turns out one of the guys was 2 years above me at school 22 years ago and recognised me and the other was a mate of a mate and i used to drink with him 20 years ago so i have been learning loads from them, without that i'm not sure if i would have the bottle to have a go.

I will do a quick what i have spent and expected then post up in 10 mins or so.

Cheers

Looks great, was the digger easy to work?

paul w
24 December 2006, 00:50
Not as easy as my shovel Lol but yeah after an hour its straight forward and i've used a back actor plenty before when i worked on a farm so it all comes back to you.

Wow, that's increadable.

I am interested as I was getting a hard time on another forum from saying I wanted to get a extension work done on the house and I was gonna do the finishing type basics myself.

I have re-wired my house, built brand new rooms in my salon, doors door frams and windows and done some DIY combi fitting with a mate... I was was saying I would just pay for a builder to and and do the main structure/shell.
Was getting a hard time by a guy in the trades - he was saying things like his 5 yr appretiship was a waste of time if we can all do it etc.
LOL

With your permission I'm gonna post a link to this thread if thats OK?

Paul, that blockwork looks really good, asp for someone with no experience, i work for a builder, and his blockwork is second to none, but it's not far above yours to be honest, and he's been laying bricks/blocks for close on 30 years..... I'm a pretty good dab hand at most things, but i've never been brave/stupid enough to try to lay face blockwork...... why, well, cos it can be seen!!!

Well done, and keep it up!!

paul w
27 December 2006, 01:40
Yeah no probs John,

Cheers Ron,yeah i'm pleased with it,not the quickest as i use the level on the face of every block as when laying to the line i find i'm leaning them slightly so use the level to keep the face upright and inline with the the one below,Will hopefully get some bricks up later today.

Cheers for now

Looks good so far, very ambitious!

No.. Meaning that if he had done that then a garage would be a walk in the park, but looking at the block work so far I dont think he will have any probs.

did you need building regs for it?

why has it got double wall (outer brick with block internals) with insulation?
are you planning of living in it at a later date?

paul w
14 February 2007, 23:14
Yeah they're a nice brick Chip and they're free, just got to knock the sheds down for more bricks for the gable end.

Hi Phil,

Yes it needed to be done to regs as it was over a certain floor area.

I have done a cavity build to keep it warmer and the insulation keeps the cavity clean as you go up,stops the gobbo dropping down and bridging the dpc. Also does'nt cost much more to insulate it and use thermal blocks.

No plans to live in it or ever move but you never know so if its done like this it might be of use to some one else in the future and also makes a nice warm workshop with office above.

Cheers

I only ask cos i can't see any in the pics!!

Looks really good Paul.... excellent!!

paul w

Wall ties Ron? the builders never said anything about them.

Lol yeah there's plenty in there, bit hard to see even in the daylight when it was going up.

Ive just done a basic bricklaying course and im very impressed. From what i learnt its all about taking your time. How are you measuring your gauge, looks spot on!

paul w
28 February 2007, 22:07
Cheers mate,

Yeah your right its all about taking your time and being fussy,my pointing up is a bit rough but then with reclaims you can get away with it but the blockwork is spot on.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v637/thelandlord/Garage/Photo-0056.jpg

I made 3 of these up for the 3 corners with bricks in them, measured the first one then took the other 2 from that then set them up with the laser and used the house behind to check the laser which is actually really good if you get it set up right and keep your eye on it.

Got all the internals finished today and 4 courses on the lintel now ready for the trusses at the weekend.

Cheers
