Got to replace a transformer for a halogen downlight (recessed in ceiling).

I've got full access to the transformer, but there no screw holes to open it, I've got the 240v wire going in, and 12v coming out, but no obvious way of opening the damn thing to remove the wiring.

I've turned the power off and tried opening the bottom (plastic is separate the the top), but the damn thing won't budge.

It's a Prolamp ET60T, this one;

Can anyone please tell me how I am supposed to open the b*stard!! :confused: :freak3:

TIA
John

Hmm, upon thinking about it, I guess these transformers come with the wiring ready attached and I just snip to length.

So I've got to take the wiring off at the junction instead I think.

Yes some are pre wired.

:) Spot on. Most are sealed units. Disconnect at the light fitting and the junction box. Make sure you turn the correct breaker off rather than just the switch, because there's a slim chance there'll be a permanent live in the JB.

If you ever do get the transformer open. Maybe worth looking at the PCB. They are so badly manufactured that all it could be at fault is a dry solder joint or a crack/burn in one of the tracks. Quick whizz with the soldering iron and its working again. But most you have to break the casing to get it open, if you break the casing, chuck it.

Thanks guys. Tried to open it and the bugger is having none of it. Will buy another.
