View Full Version : Planning on bouilding garage
bonerp 18 December 2006, 12:49 How deep do you need to go for the foundations?
I've checked that don't need planning permission :) but obviously don't want to get on wrong side of the 'law'!
I know for prefabs its about 4 inch base, but not sure for a concrete block built garage.

bobsabuilder 18 December 2006, 14:11 Depends on what your ground/soil is like, but in simple terms, it should go down to solid earth.
Your builder should know, if not ask your local building control officeer at the council.
rallying1 18 December 2006, 14:33 Its usually 1 metre for footings in good ground, any roots or drainage near by may mean you have to go deeper.
colinversion8 18 December 2006, 15:17 just dig till u hit good solid ground,clay,it could b 1foot or 6feet,just all depends on ur ground,good luck
john_s 19 December 2006, 01:45 You'll need to go down to good bearing (usually clay). The minimum depth varies by council, but there's usually a 600mm or 750mm minimum to avoid frost heave.
BTW... Even though you don't need planning permission, you might still need to make a Building Regs application. Best check with Building Control at your council.
John.

salsa-king 20 December 2006, 21:16 as said above, go see the local council office they will give you a booklet telling what needs planning permission. you still might have to apply even though you don't need a ruling on it. do a search of your local council planning office website.

I did an oline application and as long as its not over 50m2 in volume I'm fine. I'll check teh control regs though....
RON 20 December 2006, 21:52 You will almost certainly need regs.... which means you'll need to submit plans, oh, and PAY!!!

paul w 21 December 2006, 12:40 Hi Mate,
I am in the process of building my garage myself,7x6 with room above,2 sides double block and front and 1 gable reclaimed brick that i have from some sheds i am knocking down.
My footings were about 700 deep, the building inspector has been good and given me advice as i have never done anything like this before and will be doing it all myself.
The builders on the plot behind me have shown me how to lay and point and even lent me their digger and whacker!
I am up to about 6 blocks external and just waiting for frost to go to carry on with brickwork.
Will get some photos up in next few days.
Cheers Paul
