Hi,
My house is 35yr old and the stairs make a hell of a noise :brickwall when going up and down them, how can you stop that and also the upstairs floor landing has the squeaky floorboards what canyou do to stop that?
Thanks for you advice

Screw them down. If they can't move, they won't squeak as they rub against each other.
Another option might be to try spraying some furniture polish into the gaps. That might reduce the squeaking as they rub together. If one has wax in, that might be a good option.

regarding stairs you need to get access to underneath so you can glue and screw new glue blocks to the underside of treads and risers also use gripfill (no nails etc) where riser meets tread but leave to go off before jumping up and down on them! i have done this method for years at work and no squeaks.

If you get the floorboards up then sprinkle talcolm powder down. Meant to stop squeaks ....

My landing squeaked badly - even after I screwed down the boards they still squeaked in places - basically wherever the boards had been up over the years and there was either no tounge & groove or it was loose.
What I did was put 8mm ply over the top & screwed it into the floorboards at 5" centers - thousands of screws, but no more squeaks :)

Many floorboard squeaks are down to the nails coming loose too, it only takes a mm or so and the board moving up and down on the nail makes the noise!
As mentioned, a permant fix is to put a screw in near the nail. Re-hammering in the nails also fixes it, but I'm not sure how long this lasts...
