Had a bit of a leak the other day when the overflow came off of the bath waste. Basicly all the water came through the kitchen ceiling, leaving lovely brownish stains in the artex.

Whats the best thing to put on it before repainting the ceiling ? Tried just the paint and it just soaks straight in, not covering the stains

use a decent undercoat like you would use on woodwork, that seals the damp coming through again.

or "bullseye"
can't remeber the product name, zain something on zan something, but it's essentially just oil based paint which "seals" the patch so whatever you paint over the patch doesn't take on the damp stain

Always use oil based paints, not water based ones. Water based ones wont stop the stain showing through.

PolyCell do a aerosol 'stain block' drys in mins. or you can get it in brush on form.

as said, water base paints won't cover a water stain mark,it will come through again.

you can use oil under coat as the oil won't let the 'water' stain back through.
brushing oil paint on a ceiling not the best way to seal it tho if you can use the PolyCell stuff.

or you can use a white pigmented Shallac knotting, Zinsser are very good

yep, but its spirit base not oil. (ie: use de-natured alcohol, commonly known as methelated spirit to wash brushes out)

this what you mean

zinsser - that's what i was thinking of...i've used the BIN stuff before. very impressed with the results. my colleagues at work use this if there are leaks from appliances in new apartments and 9 times out of 10 it does the job
