What kind of camera where you using, not being picky but you need to alter the aperture in order to blur the background plus if you pan the shot you will also get a sense of movement in the pictures.

Was using Canon 20D so am able to play about with shutter speeds to blur back ground, not the aperture as you mention. As for panning its ok when in a big open space ie race circuit but when in a forest with saplings fern & brambles you arn't allways able to pan( big tree just too my right hand side).Just happy with the movement in the wheels.
