View Full Version : Can no one F*****G spell?
MikesWagon 23 November 2001, 14:11 Christ on a bike. It's bad enough that Colin's out of the rally, but I'm getting hacked off at all the versions of his name flying about.
McRae, it's not that difficult is it children?
Disco 23 November 2001, 14:14 MikesWagooon, please, calm down:D:D:D
SWRTWannabe 23 November 2001, 14:15 Yeah, Mikes got a point - can nobody spell Collin's name? ;)
KimA 23 November 2001, 14:18 McRae? Is he related to McDonald (the golden arches guy?) ;) ;)
Brendan Hughes 23 November 2001, 14:27 The people who really get my goat are the ones who don't know how to use apostrophes. For example, for the genitive case, "The estate car belonging to Mark" would be known as "Mark's Estate Car".
:p:p:p;)

Darren Thompson 23 November 2001, 15:28 Muppets !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dave P 23 November 2001, 18:49 Doh.....
Sorry mental block...
as an aside my spelling is very bad...
breezer 27 November 2001, 17:39 As a general rule:
If you're writing a shortened form, and missing letters out such as the 'a' in are or the 'i' in is, or it's an ownership thing (like the Mark's estate car example in a previous post); then use an apostrophe. Otherwise don't.
Eg (excuse the weirder examples):
My cousin's hamster (hamster belongs to cousin)
It's going to rain today (short for "it is")
Isn't that your arse? (short for "is not", but needs rephrasing in unshortened form)
Where's my Scooby? (short for "where is", even though talking about _my_ scooby the shortening is on the "where" not the "scooby").
The one that bugs me is not using the right "your" (or "you're") depending on whether saying someone is <something> or talking about something owned by someone. eg:
"your crap at grammar" really is crap. It should be "you are crap at..." shortened to "you're crap at..."
Sorry for my rant... Hope it reminds/shows people the correct one to use. I promise I'm not having a go at anyone here, or anyone in particular at all.
EvilBevel 27 November 2001, 17:58 Erm...
First of all, wasn't this the Motorsport forum ? Or has it turned into the "let's have a rant about other people's (peoples ?) spelling" forum ?
In case you didn't know yet ... the internet is rather international. Yes, the Lingua Franca is English, but the last thing you do on the internet, *EVER*, is to attack someone on the way they write. Internet 101 I'm afraid. This is not work, this is not an exam, this is not an "official" matter. This is a bbs, this is the internet, welcome. Try to communicate, share information, but puhlease, stop whining about spelling OK ?
I'm pretty sure that you won't complain next time you have a problem with your car (your dumpvalve just shot into the stratosphere), and someone helps you/saves you money, gives you good advice ...
I would share most sentiments if it's (its) really about a known environment (work, media, etc...) but not on here.
English is not everybodies (everybody's ? Feck me if I knew) native language BTW. Shocker, I know. Live with it.
You git's :D
Theo
Edited because of poor spelling BTW LOL

Kev 28 November 2001, 20:33 Mmmmmm this is a motorsport forum  ... sounds like a muppet thread coming !

Mr Footlong 29 November 2001, 11:14 Oh dear.........
Somebody must have been really bored to post this
If someone has a silly name, then these things will happen!
Nick :D
MikesWagon 29 November 2001, 12:04 Oh dear....... is it?
When I did the original post, I wasn't bored, just genuinely annoyed. To recap I was complaining about people mispelling Colin McRae's name - nothing at all to do with punctuation or grammar.
Nick, I realise you were probably joking with your comments about a silly name. I still think that's a pretty offensive comment. How bored were you to come up with crap like that?
Mike.
ps. If there's any probs with spelling etc in here, got new contacts in today for first time and still a bit blurry.
DavidRB 29 November 2001, 14:07 McRae might be simple to spell if you're Scottish, but not if you're a Sassenach!!
You'd probably struggle to spell that well-known English name Norman St John Stevas if you heard it spoken! And I bet you couldn't spell any of the names of the Chinese national swimming team!! ;)
Mr Footlong 29 November 2001, 14:10 Offensive? Get a life. Oh no, sorry, your scottish;)
hehe,
Nick :D
MikesWagon 29 November 2001, 14:43 I prefer the term Guff in place of Sassenach.
Norman St John Stevas, or is it St John-Stevas, I'm never sure?
And come on, who could forget Shan Ying, Wang Luna & Wu Yanyan? I don't know these people from Adam (or Eve), but I made the effort.
And Nick, it's Scottish if you please (hehehe).
Mike.
Mr Footlong 29 November 2001, 14:48 Deliberate typo 'cough'. ;)
MikesWagon 29 November 2001, 14:53 Thanks Nick,
feel much better now.
Mike.
vectraboy 30 November 2001, 16:24 Mike,
I agree with the spelling issue.
I always get Fleming, Flemming, Phlegmming mixed up.
Cheers,
Vectraboy
MikesWagon 30 November 2001, 18:24 Vectraboy,
a newbie eh? A funny one too.
Not sure if I know you or not, so tell me, is that a mk5 or a mk6 Cavalier you're driving?
Mike.
