All

I need something (thinking topbox, not sure why) to carry my laptop into work and somewhere to stow the helmet whilst I'm there. It needs to be watertight and I'd prefer something that goes on a frame rather than using a load of bungies.

Any suggestions and experiences from the front line would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Used a top box on the old GT250 when 'I woz a lad' .... and when I was dispatch riding . Load it with laptops etc and you'll get a bit top heavy. Better would be panniers for weight distribution. You can always just have one attached for commuting.

How about a rucksack? Quite a few are made to carry helmets. You just have to have one to fit your laptop. Though sliding down the road may be interesting .... :D

Actually, if you really MUST leave your helmet in it then a top box is probably best. Just be careful if you have anything heavy in it. ....

Top boxes work better on some bikes than others. I've used them on big trailies and a TDM 850. They actually look ok and seem to have less effect on handling than bolting them on to a sports bike - probably because the c of g is already pretty high.

For your purposes there really is nothing better than a top box. Easy to use, less prone to leaks than panniers and soft luggage + panniers can give serious problems when filtering (particularly if they are deep enough to take a helmet).

Thanks lads

I've got a TDM 900 so the high COG point makes sense. Say I went down the Givi route, presumably you have to buy a specific adapter for you bike then fix the box to that?

Not sure of the latest stuff but I have a rack to fit the TDM850 which takes the top box and a "wing rack" which is a cast ally structure that takes a pair of panniers and a top box.
I would imagine that you would have to buy the rack to fit the 900 and a box.
