Think of Moto GP as bikes version of F1, and think of superbikes as bikes version of touring cars. In MGP they cant be based on road machinery and the rules are relatively quite lax (as with F1), where as superbikes have to be based on a road going machines and the changes are quite restricted even to using a 'control tyre'.

So, Moto GP bikes would be substancially faster than superbikes then?

Not always, there are some tracks like Donnington where the "softer" nature of the Superbike will see it posting lap times pretty close to a MotoGP bike. A faster track though will see the extra power / lighter weight of the GP bike make much more of a difference

indeed this is true,

iirc it was Steve Hislop who had the lap record at Donington and he set that the week after the Moto GP circus had been there. He done that on his Brit superbike Ducati as well, not even a works WSB bike!!! Awesome.

This year's MotoGP bikes are more powerful than WSB, with the 990cc engines they're pushing out around 240 - 250bhp. A factory WSB will be around 200bhp, because they have to be related to road-going machines.

It's less a case of the power - there's not as much in it as you may think - but more a case of weight and better brakes that make the MotoGP bikes so much quicker. Carbon discs are awesome and taking 20-30kg off the wet weight makes a big difference too.

Having ridden both it's fair to say that the GP bike is a completely different animal, even with "numpty" dialled in on the engine management...

PS Not allowed to say which one I rode - we were going to do an article on it but they already had a deal that my contact didn't know about. I got to ride it (because it was before we found out) but the article had to stay in the can and I had to promise not to talk. Don't want to drop the guys in it so I'm staying schtum.

Yeah, because you're both bike journalists.

The superbike was the Alstare Engineering Suzuki - same session that Alan Cathcart tested on after Brands. Feel free to call Robert Wicks who should be able to confirm it.

The other one was a satellite team bike at Albacete.

Hi Swen,

No problem - I'm the editor of MotorbikesToday.com - the biggest independent online bike magazine in Europe.

And UB, if you can photograph yourself riding a bike then I will be truly impressed. :p

Best have a look here then (http://www.motorbikestoday.com/aboutus/index.htm)

I've been knocking around Scoobynet for 4 years or so now, (on a few different tags as I don't log on for a few months & lose my details, change e-mail / laptop etc and just start again). I also have some good friends in the bike jorno industry, and can say from what I've read of SB's posts that he certainly isn't a "wind up"

Things like this happen in the indusry, even I managed to blag my way onto an Aprillia (RSV) race day here in Spain, desipte having an abilty of riding a V-twin fast on a track about level with your average newbie trackday rider :lol1:

Can't get on with v-twins at all, thankfully did ok though :thumb:

Bike jornos get some real good days out, nice work if you can get it :D
