Nice, I like the second one, car hitting the dip. Shame about the people in the background but that is rallying I guess, it's difficult not to get a shot of someone in the background nowadays.
Keep up the good work.

Bearing in mind I have never even been to a rally... :lol1:

I think springbok's comment is spot on - get rid of those people! If that's not possible, then (IMHO) your only options are to crop really tight to cut them out, or pan so that the car is sharp but the background is blurred.

Then you're in to a whole load of other issues - eg, some people, myself included, like to see crisp gravel flying off the wheels which you won't get when panning with a slow shutter speed

FWIW, motorsport photography looks quite easy - get an SLR with a long lens and it's job done. Not so! There are a whole raft of techniques to use, judgements to make, and a great deal of manual dexterity/skill in getting the framing and timing just right.

There are some superb rally photographers on here, including Mr S Bok. So it's a good place to learn ;)

Richard.

Thanks Richard, you are too kind, I just spray and pray most times :D
The only time I was actually happy to see a person in the background of a shot was Wales Rally GB last year.
Alastair McRae flew in in his chopper to watch his big brother go through the stage. Unfortunately when Colin came through the stage I couldn't get his little brother in the background due to Colin's "style" of driving, it would have made a nice shot to get his little brother watching for tips:D
As Richard said lots of other things to consider.
You come across a corner,
- which way is the light coming from (if any),
- are there too many obstacles in the way to clutter the shot (people, trees, tape).
- How do you think the cars will react to the corner,
- etc etc, the list is endless.
A bit of USM on the second shot and fiddling with PS would make it pop out a bit better I think, but for your first event if it was mine I be happy.

Nice pics, I like the 2nd one too  And, just to be original I agree about the speccos! :D I have a nice one from Sherwood pines, can't find it at the mo but it shows how you can lose people... This is from the Premier last year I think,
