My mum recently had a new bathroom installed including a new toilet but it's never flushed very well - takes several attempts. I've just had a major confrontation with the builder on her behalf and he says he doens't know what to do..... he thinks it might need a new cisten ? he fitted the entire bathroom so it would mean the vanity unit needs to be ripped out again and would a larger cisten fit behind it and actually make a difference? Will end up taking him 2 court in the end (and wont let him do any more work) but would really like a clue/idea of cost of what to do to cure it.

Normally poor flush (several goes at the handle!) means the rubber diaphragm has perrished in the drop valve assembly. If this is brand new toilet and cistern, either the drop valve is fitted badly, or they've used an old one. That's all i know about cisterns i'm afraid. Can't think what else it could be.

From the way this bloke has been wouldn't be surprised if he'd not fitted a new one - despite charging for one. But if that was so, would guess he'd know and get it sorted rather than all the trouble he's going to get himself into....

Are you saying it takes several pushes of the handle for it to flush or several flushes to drown the chocolate otter?

The first would be down to poor/old parts or bad fitting. The second could be the cock is set too low therefore the cistern is not holding it's capacity or it is a crap design and no amount of buggering about will fix it

Yer takes several goes to flush anything (not enough water provided) Was all supposed to be brand new.... surely he should have set it up right in the first place !

Is it close coupled or low level ?
Is it a handle or a push button ?
Is the water level at the marker on the inside of the cistern ?
Nothing in the flush pipe blocking it ?

??
Push button on top - no idea about the water level it's all enclosed behind what I think is a sealed unit - and I'm 125 miles away from it!

130 + would be safer

If a push button should only be a 6 ltr flush anyway , he has nt fitted a new cistern on to an old wc pan has he ?

Get them to try flushing it into a bucket and check theres nothing in the pipe or the back of the pan inlet

Had somebody (keen DIY-er) look at toilet and they reckon it's been installed wrong with cisten too low so not enough water level drop to the toilet (that seem possible?) Moving it up 2 inches will mean all the custom-built unit will no longer fit / need new tiles

Alot of the new concealer cisterns in furniture units are very low compared to the older style low level set ups.
I had two call outs last week to WCs not flushing correctly both were blockages in the Flush pipe / inlet
