View Full Version : VTR1000 Opinions?
StiX 25 October 2006, 08:57 A mate of mine who works on rigs (well he did, think for ages now hes been shore based), has a VTR1000.
He also has a TVR and is pretty much minted. Anyway he recently moved to Denmark with his girlfriend and took his TVR with him, left the bike behind in his parents house.
Yesterday, I moved his bike to my shed as his parents are moving and no longer have the space.
Thunder Road (rip off prices btw) offered him £800 for the bike, which is a pretty much mint original P-reg VTR with quite low mileage (not sure how much).
He declined that offer, (don't blame him even though he doesn't exactly need the cash) as a quick look sees these going for between £1400 and £2300 for P/R reg bikes.
If I offered him £1400 he would probably sell it to me, and he has offered in the past that I could ride it anyway as long as I obviously insured/taxed it myself.
However, what I wanted off anyone was opinions/thoughts about these bikes.
I only rode it for about a mile yesterday, very carefully due to the bike not exactly being road legal at the moment.
Seemed ok, in the past I have owned:
Fazer 600
VFR800
VFR750
SV650s.
So apologies for the long old story, but any opinions?
Thanks.
speed demoness 25 October 2006, 10:26 I'm on my 2nd firestorm, other half used my first one as a trade in for himself, so I ended up with his RSV Mille...... needless to say, I'm now back with my storm, not that the mille wasn't a canny bike mind.. I just felt more comfortable on the VTR.
It's an excellent all round bike... good for commuting or scratching:D
£800 is deffinately a pathetic offer:nono: and your mate did ight to refuse it!
you've obviously ridden v twins previously, so therefore you should feel right at home on the storm:thumb:
Has your mate done any mods to it? The storm is renowned for having soft suspension, and most owners tend to upgrade the shock and the forks. I could get away with my first one being standard, but my current one has a Penske racing shock fitted and hyper pro fork springs.
Also a problem which ges people quite paranoid are the CCT's... a few have had them go, but i've never had any problems with either of my bikes, and there's not any really any pattern as to why they go... or at least we can't seem to see one on the storm site!
I think once you've owned and ridden a storm, they're always in your heart.
A few of the guys on the vtr site have got rid of their storms for other makes/models, but they wish they'd never got rid of the storm in the 1st place and now a good majority of them are back on 'old faithful' !
If you can get the bike for £1400 off your mate, then go for it.. it's a bloody good price!:thumb:
StiX 25 October 2006, 10:56 I have ridden a V-twin before, albeit with a bit less poke as my SV had 75bhp.
It looks to me to be completely standard, apart from a headlight protector and Sigma alarm.
Do they all have single seat humps? On the ones I have seen they have? Bit of a pain getting it into the shed with no grab rail!
CCTs?
I am seriously thinking about it, at least to 'borrow' it while its in my shed :)
Thanks for the input btw, and the PMed link :)
speed demoness 25 October 2006, 11:01 no probs stiX... like I said.. hope to see you around the storm site:thumb:
CCT's are the cam chain tensioners mate !
seriously tho... don't let it worry you.
and yeah... think they all come with the seat humps!
3times 25 October 2006, 11:51 had mine for just over a year.
easy to ride with as much power as I want. the seat humps come off as the seat is a proper double.
downside is the 16 ltr tank, reserve comes on at 80-90 miles.
would I change it? yes, but only for a later model with bigger tank or something like the Mille.......................big twins rule!
StiX 25 October 2006, 12:06 ah Cam Chain Tensioners :)
So obviously a P-Reg is the small tank. I noticed the fuel light was on when I rode it yesterday, there is no 'switched' reserve though I take it - just the light to tell you?
Its also the first bike I have ridden that has a manual choke - all versions the same?
Pudders69 25 October 2006, 13:13 Big, soft twin innit, good alternative to out and out sports bikes.
Sound sweet with cans, and can wheelie with the best of em.
Limits show on-track :thumb:
StiX 25 October 2006, 17:27 Thats ok then, as no intention of going on track :)
Noticed yesterday how quiet the standard cans are - my SV with a devil carbon can was way louder.
scoobysmiff 25 October 2006, 18:23 go for it, they are a lovely bike to ride, i've had a go on a couple of them now and didn't have any major problems with then at all, not as fast as my gixer thou but it aint one of them so thats not a worry, easy to ride i thought, and well worth a look mate for that money.
GROWLER_GRRRR 25 October 2006, 18:48 check out the auto trader for prices you may find a lot of people want good money but the bikes never sell so take the prices with a pinch of salt .

StiX 25 October 2006, 21:18 Fair comment Growler, but I haven't seen one lower than £1300/1400?
Anyway, my mate owes me one now, so I may just insure/tax and ride it indefinitely.
When he is 'home' from work, he is in Denmark so its not like he needs it!
He would probably sell it bottom book if I wanted, but I'll probably just ride it for now.
It feels good to ride, but haven't let rip on it yet - looking forward to it. When we used to go out and I had a VFR800 (non-VTEC), there was bugger all in it - but he he had more drive out of corners due to the V-twin, then I used to catch him up.

who says they don't sell???
there are a few guys on the storm site at the mo wanting these bikes... and also a few selling.
infact Growler... I believe you've been asking about them for when you run the CB500 into the ground!:Suspiciou
If you're interested, I know where you could possibly get one for maybe just under 2k:thumb:
STiX.. wouldn't say the original cans are quiet... but the storm deffinately benefits from having aftermarket cans put on... I have Yoshimura's on mine... killswitch backfires sound awesome !:norty: :D
