Hi, ive been reading this forum for a year or so and ive plucked up the courage to post some pics.

im using a Minolta Dimage RD 3000 slr (apparently the first dslr, not sure on that though) its ainceint and awkward. Im getting a canon 300d at the end of the week and i can't wait to use it, should be better than the dimage.

I'd like some comments/crits.

Lovely shots, I can see you'll need to try the new 300d out in the competitions... :)

I really like the B&W one in the middle.

Edited to add: some of them seem a bit soft, either focus a bit off or maybe they've been compressed/decompressed a bit too many times ?

Nice photos you got. Please allow me to write some comments to them...
1st picture: Great colours! If this shot was done from a facade of a house, it would have been great to also see a part of the window, a wooden door or something like this.
3rd picture: It would have been great to see the fence a little bit more from the side (the fence looks quite old and would have been a great cut through the landscape).
4th picture: The bridge looks great, but I would have preferred a shot from below the street (bottom of the bridge), for showing its architecture. -> Could have been a great abstract. :)
6th picture: The landscape looks great in b/w. It's my personal favourite photo. :)
7th picture: Shooting the bird more 'off-center' would have made this picture much more interesting. I know it's tough to do this, because we normally tend to put the object/subject into the center of the frames. But believe me, off-center makes much more interesting photos and much less static. Just try several different shots and angles next time around. Putting the bird towards the upper left corner would have been the solution here since he stares towards the botton right corner.
I know you will enjoy your Canon 300D. Keep on posting.
Cheers, Daniel

I like the first one, the reds are great! The bridge pic could do with the use of an graduated neutral density filter to hold back the sky a bit and give the clouds some better definition. I like the wing mirror sunset/sunrise and the last pic has got a lot of flare but it kind of adds to the shot in a strange way. All of the pics could do with a bit of sharpening to give them just that little bit more punch.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your new camera! :thumb:

I agree about the need for a little sharpening - it's something that you always need after shrinking an image to web-sized, regardless of how sharp the original might have been.

It might also be worth thinking about the rule-of-thirds in a couple of cases - the blackbird, for example, is smack-bang in the middle of the frame, and you have the horizon right in the middle of a couple of other shots which I tend to find looks a bit odd. (That said, I do really like the mono landscape one - you've managed to show how similar the cloud texture is to the foreground, which takes a keen eye IMHO. Keep it up!)

Thanks for the comments, the pics have been compressed a few times I think so i'll sharpen them up in future.
I'll look out for a graduated neutral density filter for my 300d as I got it yesterday and wont be using the minolta again. Ive read up on the 3rds rule and i'll try and put it into practice.

i had taken some other shots of the leaves with a window in the frame but i couldn't get high enough to get it square so it doesnt look right.

GREAT!!
The leaves photo with the now included window makes it MUCH more personal and what I like the best is that you placed the window to the right side of the picture. Can you imagine, how 'boring' the photo would have looked when the window was centered? This is awesome and it's cool that you played around and gave it another try. Please don't get me wrong, your first attempt of only showing the leaves is great for showing the repetitive structure/patterns that exists in nature and was a good photo by itself, just a totally different idea behind it. The window shot looks like a painting now. :)

I don't know about the bird shot though. Maybe I just don't really like the photo in its crop mode. I would have put the bird even more to the upper left extreme corner but in this already taken picture it would mean even more crop and less details. Try different framings and angles in your future photos.

Off center framings, different angles and especially variations in Depth of Field is what I believe the FUN part in taking photos. It will show your personal and 'creative' style next to the subject/object. ;)

The B/W photo looks again great and you have a good eye for b/w objects!

I am very much looking forward to future shots of yours. Try to find your personal style and take your time by doing so.
I hope this bla, bla of mine is of any help to you.
Cheers, Daniel

Nice pics the window one is good. Where is that bridge located love it, I guessed it was in Scotland. Is that a Vaxhall astra 2.0 16v rocker cover?

cheers swiss scooby for the feedback. i dont like the bird photo either, I just put it up to add variation.

the bridge is in Scotland about 40 miles north of Ullapool, scenery is amazing up there. Rocker is from vauxhall 2 litre 16 valve xe. I had buffed it back to metal.
