View Full Version : What do you think of a 'Photo of the year' comp?

Just been looking back at some of the past photo comps and some other images shown on here. There's some cracking shots :D

It got me thinking, why don't we have an end of year comp, in which any picture taken in that year is elligible? :wonder: We could use the same basic rules as the normal photo comp, or not ;)

Pictures would not neccesarily have to be taken for one of the comps so any subject would be allowed. Would we need to have seperate categories, such as Sport, Wildlife, Portrait, Landscape?

Just a thought for discussion, what do you think?

excellent suggestion :D

Themes would be a great idea too

Can you think of any others or does 4 just about cover it? Should Wildlife be Nature? Should Portrait be People?:wonder:

How about 'pets' is a category? That might have a wider appeal to get more people posting too?

Great idea :)

No themes. It only adds confusion. I could enter a couple of images in multiple categories, but if restricted to just one I'd prolly go for the category where other images were weakest. Not that any of us on here is competitive or anything :lol1:

Let's just get as many entries in as possible. Anything goes. Then how about we thin it down to a short-list (20?) by voting in this forum, then throw the finalists open to voting to everybody in Non-Scooby Related?

Richard.

Only reason I thought of categories was so that we're not comparing Car pics with Landscapes or Studio stuff. There would be a winner in each category and then we could open it out to the rest of SN to decide the overall winner?:wonder:

I think we would need to limit the number of entries per person, otherwise it could get swamped and be too difficult to judge.

Throw the comp judging open to NSR and the shot with a scantily clad young lady on the bonnet of a scooby is guaranteed to win - just sorting the model now ;) :D

LOL I think even that is expecting a higher level of intelligence than you get in NSR ;) I always thought it should be re-named 'The right room for an argument'

Fair comment  Maybe have to rethink the NSR bit, but I still say absolutely anything goes and multiple entries with no categories, then we shortlist them for final voting in this forum :)

Better wash mine before I get my 2 fav young females in Pauls studio!!! :norty: You'll have competition mate!!! :D

Yup, I see your thinking Richard, the 'scantily clad young lady on the bonnet of a scooby' shot would cross over 'People' and 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' categories ;)

I think we should allow absolutely anything goes in Photoshop too, those OOB images are just one example.

Great idea, I do think that a few 'general' categories would be a good idea just to even things out...

Maybe something like...

People
Transport
Scenery
Animals

Just my 2pennies worth....

Don't take my warped humour seriously :D .... I think it should be open to the rest of SN to vote on a finalised shortlist of images as already mentioned.

To have the worked judged by SN members who perhaps don't look at photographs in the same way as the "SN snappy pack" will offer a wide range of views, the photo crew will still vote anyway.

The views and opinions of NSR can be just as relevent - however misguided :D

Why not :D Second thoughts I have a feeling Kev (Flat4) could beat us hollow!!! We'd have to play the star cards!

Great idea. Love these comps as it gives us another excuse to go out shooting. :thumb:

Can we have a category for.. Topless Pregnant Ladies :D

I was only thinking the other day that 4 weeks between our photo comp's seems a long time, but I realise that this time is needed especially when you have to find a shot to fit a theme.

SO...

How about we run a photo of the week comp ?
If we run it without a theme and any shot goes we should get quite a few entries each week.
Any thoughts on this ?

Wouldn't mind seeing a best of the best vote with regards to the winning entries of the mini comps throughout this year. Would be interesting to see them all on the same page.
I've never bothered to enter one of the comps though, my lowly Fuji S600z and lack of skill wouldn't stand a chance against the quality of the entries of recent months!

My first entry into one of the comps was the previous one to shadows (I forget the name). My entry was taken on my Digital Ixus 400, the only tweaking it got was being re-sized and I came third with it. Give it a go, don't feel you need £000's of kit to get a good photo

I think it's a great idea!

My problem with the photo comps is that to see each image you have to click each link and half way down you forget where that image I liked was. Shame we couldn't have it so that images showed up on the comp page. It wouldn't take any extra bandwidth for SN.

Echo.

The images DO appear in the Photo Comp.

Your Scoobynet settings are wrong. :cuckoo:

On Scoobynet... Click 'User CP' then 'Edit Options' scroll down the page and tick the 'Show Images' box.

It sounds good to me, the existing themed competitions are ideal for one particular approach, but sometimes anyone just gets one of those 'wow, I like it' kind of pictures and this would provide an audience and some feedback.

I'd really really like it if the 'go to first new post' was fixed on Scoobynet though, it makes it so frustrating on long threads now...

Yup, I agree, damned frustrating.

Pic of the year sounds like a terrific idea. I've taken a couple of days off work (tomorrow and tuesday) and will be heading back up into the Jura to shoot some more landscapes so hopefully the weather will be good and I can bag my shot of the year as the colours are magnificent just now.

Christine & I went out today in search of something but the colours are not quite there yet over here, next weekend maybe :)

Look forward to the Jura shots, then we can stick it in the diary for next year :thumb:

I think the comp should be a theme of at least 3 images.

encourages a further dimension of creativity.
