Iam at the age where i can just rember Group B i love watching videos of them and wish i could rember them flat out on the stages. Just not not the same at rally day or goodwood. But is it true WRC cars are quicker overall over the whole stage.

GRP B for me too.
I think the active diffs, traction control, computers etc. mean WRC cars can put the power down more effectively.
But they don't go sideways as much as grp B used to. So overall they are probably quicker.
Cue tech wizard to prove me totally wrong :-)

Agreed.

I like going to watch the amateur rallies with the mki and mkii escorts  The scoobs are boring to watch except for the sound :D The Evos however are the worst to watch :(

I would have loved to have seen Group B cars in full anger in the forests.

Being an old git and having competed in rallying for years I can tell you without doubt Gp B was far better to compete in or watch, the sounds were awsome and like a previous reply said you had to drive them, they didnt do half of it for you, the only thing that had a flappy paddle was your arse, as whatever you were driving propelled itself towards the nearest tree like it had been shot out of a catapult!!!
I had the pleasure of testing with Tony Pond ( you oldies will remember him) in a 6R4 at bovingdon and it was the most terrifying thing I have ever done, I thought I could drive but my god I felt like I was driving like my dad compared to him.

Group B no question.

Audi Quattro S1, the noise from that thing was so loud with sheer power.

Still makes me smile thinking about sleeping in cars for days at a time following the Lombard RAC Rally all over the country in the mid 80's.

I have to say that Group B was best, but we are looking at it from a first love point of veiw, only remember the good bits, and good bits they were, not just for the ralling but all the other bits. Like being able to see the the 6r4 engine in service,I could have traped my finger in the trumpets, you get that close, infact I would to thank the mecanic who was changing the front strut on an 6r4 for throwing it onto my foot.

To see them in full chattle was an experiance if not a short one, 86 was the year, chatsworth water splash, keilder water splash, out side margram house and 3 of us sleeping in an Opel Manter, if you could call it sleep.

However, ive seen both wrc and Group b on the same stages and every rallie has had its good bits and bad.

The rally has not really changed, you still gets people making new friends around camp fires, sleeping in cars, fireworks in the distance, dodgie burgar vans,, toilet tissue pine trees, smell of bacon in the morning, reluctent girlfriends being hiked up a hill for 2 miles, rally fans who remember the "Old days" , only cars seem to change, but the same grit to win is always there.

Go and see it,dont just watch it on TV. Rally GB, coming to a forest near you soon.(if you live in wales).

RAC '85 was the year, not '86.
By '86 Audi and Ford had officially withdrawn and there were no works cars there.

So 1985 it was.

Forget Rally Wales, prices are a rip off, and only allow for very limited movement. Use the money you'll save, add a little bit more and head for somewhere nice. Like the Monte in January.

I took this pic years ago at Lightwater Valley though I cant remember the exact year. We went to a rally nearly every week back then, oh hang on, we still do ;)

Note: My photographic skills haven`t improved in over 20 years :)
